Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Family with two teens spent an afternoon here, and loved it! We parked in the free lot across from the Farmers Market, which we enjoyed. We went to a couple thrift shops, the beautiful Kona Inn Shopping Village, walked past the palace and church, and ended up having lunch at the Kona Brewery. My 16 year-old said it was her favorite day. We bought lots of stuff. I was pleasantly surprised to see it is rebounding from the pandemic, and most things were open. Merchants were all super nice. I recommend doing research before coming here so that you have a plan and some idea of what you want to do. We walked all over so wear comfortable shoes and cool clothing. And don't forget your mask.

Every time of day on Ali'i Drive is different. Early morning, walkers, runners, bikers and just characters. Midday, heavy traffic, slower pace but easier to enjoy the surroundings including the different ocean openings along the road. Evening, late walkers, different light shows along the way at hotels, rentals and homes. Lastly, beautiful sunsets at various locations along the way.

We have been annual visitors to the shops and store on Ali’s Drive. Loved hitting the restaurants to watch a sunset or two.
We went for the first time this year and all the public parking is gone. Only pay lots. The cost is $12/hr and none of the businesses have the authority to validate.
$12 an hour, is the management company trying to kill tourism? I am not going back.

We stayed 8 days and nights in a wonderful condo called Kona Bali Kai on Ali'i Dr. Actual address was Honolua but also Kona. Right next to it was Da Pioke' Shack, delicious fresh poke! There was a lovely pool in the courtyard of the condo, a quiet place to stay, very clean and well kept place. Our condo had 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. We drove to Volcano Nat'l Park, toured a coffee farm, drove to the Southernmost point of the island Ka''le ( Naalehu). Also drove up North to Hawi village. Went to Hilo and drove up North and around back to Kona. Ate 3 times in Kona at Magics Beach Grill- delicious food and great ocean view. Had a great meal at Huggo's, too. Loved Kona, would like to move there! Wonderful kind, polite nice respectful friendly people everywhere! Also went to 4 thrift shops in Kona!

First time there we went to the public lot near the farmers market. I found the $28 for two hours of parking absolutely ridiculous. Found free parking in subsequent visits. Not sure why the vendors in the markets would tolerate having tourists pay that much to visit their typical tourist shops,

1st time to
after a long frustrating 7 hour flight I hoped to began seeing the beautiful island and enjoy all the money we had saved.
It was about 7pm and as we turned up this street, all we could see was homeless ice heads hanging out and roller skating out in front of our car. What the....?
We finally got to or condo and settled in. The next day we
walked about a half mile back down Alii to the shops. It is breathtaking and beautiful. But the homeless still just chilling on their phones and mumbling to ya as you walk past. Made us very
uncomfortable and unsafe.
The shops were nice and prices reasonable, I thought. This was a one time trip for us so we wanted to.explore. Just beware, I think if they removed the icee's it would be much better.

This is where all the action is from shops to restaurants and the like. There is plenty of variety here of things to do, see and buy. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is there are some section where the sidewalk and road are very narrow and at certain times of night you are really relying on the drivers to be safe around so many people. In particular, the section near the volleyball court by Humpy's Big Island Alehouse is very narrow. The section north of that is plenty safe though.

It's pretty run down in this area. Parking is ridiculous at like $14 an hour. Many empty store fronts, I assume it's the aftermath of Covid. We gave ourselves 2-3 hours down here and were finished in about 90 mins, which included souvenir shopping, walking from one end to the other, visiting the farmers market and stopping for a shave ice. I am glad we stayed more north in the resort area by Hapuna Bay.

I had high expectations, but was disappointed. This place has potential but is a dirty, run down dump. Drug addicts and homeless everywhere. Someone overdosed while we were there. It's like they don't even make an effort to make it nice. You'd think they would since they receive cruise ships twice per week. They couldn't even maintain the bathroom on the pier. Two broken urinals, and not clean at all. Just disgusting. It's shameful really, because it could be super nice if they made some effort.

Went I entered the condo there was a strange smell. Within 5 hours my eyes were swollen. I asked if I could get out of the unit due to the mold and the smell. The owner refused stating there was no mold. I got a mold get and yes indeed there is mold. See the photo. I had to stay outside the entire stay and take medicine at night so I could sleep. The condo was also dirty floors walls and ants in the pantry. See the photos.

Hello,
Looking for recommendations:
My husband and I will be bringing our 9 month old to the Kona area in October. We haven't booked accommodations yet and are looking for recommendations. The Kailua-Kona area and Ali'i road sounds great but further details or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
We'd like a location that allows us to walk to the beach as well as have an evening stroll near commercial area for dinners and cocktails.
Thank you,

We enjoyed our stay at Hale Kona Kai. It's within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants on Ali'i Drive and you wouldn't have to worry about parking. On the other hand, if money is no object, I agree that King Kam would be a lovely choice with its small protected beach area.

If you are referring to the street fair that takes place every month, I believe it is held on the third Sunday of each month on Ali'i Drive.

Is this in walking distance from the area where the NCL cruise ships dock?
Written 2 February 2017
Aloha :) The large cruise ships anchor offshore of downtown Kona, and they use small boats to ferry passengers to shore -- they land at the Kona Pier, which is at the northern starting point for Ali'i Drive, and many shops, eateries, and historic sights are nearby this spot (= EZ to reach on foot :). If you want to venture further south on Ali'i Drive, there's a public trolley which can take you all the way down to Keauhou Bay (it will pass by White Sands Beach, etc.)... this is an alternative means of transport vs. taxis, etc. Enjoy your Kona visit!

How long would it take to walk this Drive? I read people driving it and it's also walkable. Avoiding the driving if it's too crowded. walking is probably best.
Written 20 March 2016
I agree with everyone, although we were at the far, far end (Sheraton Kona) so we didn't walk it ourselves.
