- Ellie R5 contributionsFamily walk on the Ston walls! We were a family group of 9 and decided to break into smaller groups to do different sections of the wall to suit the different needs and wants! The active men and teens went off at pace up and over to Mali Ston, back over and then across the lower wall in Ston. 9 year old and mum went up to the top for the views (but not over to Mali Ston) and then across. Younger children just went across the lower section. Enjoyed by all and then into the castle and then onto a restaurant for pizza and shellfish!Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 July 2024

- Richard TBurnley, United Kingdom1,272 contributionsQuieter and smaller than Dubrovnik, but equally historicGreat to do when returning to Dubrovnik from Mostar or wine tasting in the area. A quaint old town with extensive city walls (but not fully walkable). Good value at 10 Eros, but much less extensive that Dubrovnik, however definitely worth a visit, especially when combined with a visit to Little Ston just around the corner. Lots of restaurants in the narrow streets within the walled town.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 September 2024

I have never heard about Ston and the fact the it's walls are called the Chinese wall of Europe. The wall is quite impressive although some parts are still being reconstructed and look quite unattended.
The staff member from whom we bought tickets was very polite and explained everything to us. The tickets are also well priced at 70kn per adult and 40 per child/student (don't forget your ISIC card). The tickets last all day so you can renter the walls how many times you desire.
The walls are divided into two parts one is shorter and takes about 20-30 minutes to get there and return to the starting point the other part is longer and will take you around 30-40 minutes to go one way. The longer route will take you from the town of Ston to the Mali Ston. The path is quite challenging you have to walk some steep steps to the top so definitely not something I would recommend for people with knee issues. The steps are also narrow so it is a bit of challenge when people going opposite directions meet. If you parked your car in Ston and would like to return from Mali Ston to Ston after your visit I would suggest taking the pedestrian path from the village which takes only 10-15 minutes and doesn't require you to go any additional steps :D
Definitely recommend.

Although comparisons are made to The Great Wall of China this is a major exaggeration since at just over 4 miles they don't even match Hadrian's Wall at 73 miles long. That said, they are still well worth seeing.
The walls stretch out over the hillside above Ston and it's possible to walk along a continuous length of them right over to the attractive little town of Mali Ston on the other side. Entry fee is 70 Kuna (£8.50) per adult which includes access to Fort Veliki Kastio. The latter is just a shell but provides a good lookout point.
Options exist to walk around the walls overlooking Ston itself, a short but steep climb and descent which includes a few turrets or to take the very steep route over to Mali Ston (veer to the right if coming from Ston). We did both and can testify it's a good workout, especially if like us you walk it back over the wall from Mali Ston too! It is possible to return on a less arduous route by following a footpath which runs alongside the road between the towns but of course you don't get the views.
There is a section of wall which has still to be restored and was off-limits at the time of our visit, as was Koruna Fortress at Mali Ston which had restoration work in progress. The path on the Mali Ston side between the walls and town is a bit rough and ready however I'd recommend sturdy footwear for the wall walk in any case.
Apart from the exercise you can take in good views over Ston and it's salt flats (the salt was a large part of why the wall was built) and there are several nice restaurants in Mali Ston which is a picturesque little place to get refreshments.
We spent around 5 hours exploring the walls, towns and having lunch in between. Take a camera, some water and enjoy the relative peace in comparison to Dubrovnik's more popular walls.

After the Great Wall of China, Ston possesses the second longest stone wall in the world. The city wall has been restored for several years but you can get off a large section of this from Mali Ston (from the Koruna Fort that is being restored) to Ston or vice versa for the price of € 10 pp. This ticket not only allows you to step off the city wall but also gives you access to the Kastio castle located in Ston.
When you have taken the stairs to the top you have a beautiful view of the port of Mali Ston where the oysters are farmed and on the other side of the salt extraction fields of Ston.
You can end your visit by tasting the flat oysters that are grown there for a price ranging from € 1.30 to € 2 depending on which establishment you are going to eat them in.

Well to be honest, it’s a Wall. Yes you get great views, but there is not even one signpost with background info or the walls history explained. They had a 4-pages long leaflet with minor information in Italian only. For the price of 70 kn/10€ it’s way overpriced and I would recommend the view from the town or the hill opposite the wall. (Am a history enthusiast, even studied archaeology for some time but this is not it…)

The entry fee is 70 kuna, reduced to 50 kuna, if you have the 3 or 7 day Dubrovnik Pass, so leave this until heading north, if you're starting from Dubrovnik, and are planning to buy the pass in Dubrovnik, as it doesn't seem to be available in Ston.
There are two walks you can do, one a short loop, which might take about 20 minutes, and the other, over to Mali Ston, which will take most people perhaps an hour, depending on how hot it is. If you're going to Mali Ston, be sure to take water. It's pretty steep in parts, and there isn't a lot of shelter from the sun, but if you're fit, the views are well worth it.
Parking is by the meter in either village, at 8 kuna per hour. I personally thought two hours was sufficient, unless you're planning on eating there.

What an amazing place! It’s a must-see historic site.
We visited in mid-March and had the walls all to ourselves.
The climb up and along the walls is physically challenging as it’s narrow and steep in places, with a sheer drop of several hundred feet on one side. Not suitable if you suffer from vertigo… so I did struggle with this on one very narrow part of the wall until it widened and levelled out a little.
It’s not suitable for anyone with mobility issues and as the railings are not close together I would say it’s not suitable for young children.
But if you can cope with the challenge, you’re amply rewarded with wide and stunning views of Ston, the surrounding countryside and mountains.
You can start the walk on the walls at either end. We started from the entrance at Ston, walking towards Mali Ston, and took the flat footpath back to Ston.
Mali Ston is a quaint village with a pretty waterfront where lots of boats & yachts are moored up. We noticed plenty of seasonal painting & renovation going on in the village and sadly everything was shut in March, but I’m sure it’s buzzing in the summer.

Ston City Walls are very well preserved and they surround all the old and new towns (Ston and Mali Ston). They are located in Ston, a Middle Ages town near Dubrovnik, in Dalmatian Coast. Nowadays, you can walk on them and go to the two towns. They are wonderful and you can see fantastic views of the towns and surroundings: the salt works and the sea. Really, a very curious and interesting place. In fact, we spend 2-3 hours to walk around all parts of walls. Very recommendable, of you visit this region.

Paying 10 euros per person, you can access the entire wall area until the exit in the village of Mali Ston. This path is not a round trip! It's just one way. You start in the old town, walking along the wall area until you exit at Mali Ston, on the other side of the mountain. There in Mali Ston, you can have lunch or a coffee in the surrounding restaurants and walk back to the old town using an exclusive walkway. The tour around the walls generally takes between 50 minutes and two hours, depending on the visitor's physical fitness. Best time is in the morning in order to avoid the hot midday sun. It's not worth going to Ston if the weather isn't good!

Are there 2 different walks you can do? I have read there is a shorter one where you climb up and return the same way you entered. If so, how steep or how many stairs are there to climb to get to the top?
Written 28 January 2023
Yes, there are two different walks as you describe.
I don't remember how many stairs to the top of the shorter one, but weather dependent, it might be one not to attempt if mobility is an issue. It's shorter, but it's still steep and there are a lot of steps.
Written 30 January 2023
I am handicapped and use an electric mobility scooter. I can walk very short distances. I will be traveling from Dubrovnik to Split and would like to know if this town is worth stopping at. I assume I can't access the "wall" but is there any places to admire the views or other things to see if this town? Thank you for any replies!
Written 18 January 2020
Hi - the walls are stairs, not accessible by wheelchair, quite challenging. But the city is nice, there is a cosy little square with many terraces, a small museum and a church- I’m not sure about the castle, the yard is accessible I suppose

Jane
