Was interested in the history and the process. Unfortunately, there was not much of either. They should really improve the TV presentation and do something with the grounds.

They still harvest the salt the same way as they did back in 167 BC. Sea, sun and evaporation. Each pond, save one, is named after a Saint

It is unbelievable that this salt works is four thousand years old. The salt production process is completely natural. The sun and the sea that after evaporation gives pure natural salt. It is certainly worth a visit.

Ston is a beautiful town and a quick tour round the salt works gives you some context and history over why it was built.

Did not do a tour but can see most of it from the front gate. Small gift shop at the gate where salt samples can be purchased.

These salt ponds have been in operation for centuries, and the produced salt was at one time worth its weight in gold--hence the need for city fortifications. Best seen from atop the city walls.

I would give yourself plenty of time. 3-4 hours as a minimum. I would also learn about Ston and the Salt Works on the internet prior to your visit. It will put the sites and visit in perspective. Be sure to stop for a lunch... More
