I had a wonderful trip with Captain Hill. He was always on top of putting new bait on and helping when you got a fish! Hill also has a great personality which makes the trip more fun as well. Highly recommend!! Thank you 😊

When you fish with Hill you fish according to Hill’s instructions and You Catch Fish! It’s called discipline. He is a true captain and a gentleman that truly cares about his clients and his job. His job is to find the fish and have us haul them up! His instructions are spot on and we all caught limits of halibut salmon and rock fish. If you are offended by orders and a true captain manning his ship then go elsewhere. If you want to catch fish and can respect orders that actually work then look no further Fish with Hill. I never touched my bait and when the fishing was good you just heard “forget the fish bait the hook”. I have never caught saltwater fish so easily nor my mate. Hill did not cheat either meaning he kept constant eye on the catch and if it was rockfish and not halibut he picked up and moved. Hill is about catching all the right fish not just the low hanging fruit. Hill is worth every penny.

My husband and I, along with two other couples, recently went fishing with Hill Norvell. We flew into Anchorage and rented a car and drove the Old Seward Highway to his lodge, which is just outside of Seward, Alaska. This is a family run business and the food was amazing, prepared by his wife and his two daughters. They prepared two dinners for us and we went out to eat the other two nights in Seward, which was fun, as Seward is a great town!! The scenery is extraordinary and the fishing was SO MUCH FUN!! We caught halibut, sea bass and rockfish; saw orcas and porpoises and had a packed lunch every day. If you want beer or soda, you have to bring it yourself, but they supplied drinking water. Fishing two days was adequate, as we reached our yearly limit of Halibut on the second day (you can only catch two a day, four total for the year for out-or-staters). The third day, he arranged for a river fishing trip which was amazing (Alaska River Adventures-I just posted a review). His deck hand, Koby, is fantastic. He is a hard working, witty young man and we enjoyed our time with him. Hill helped us with the packaging of our fish to bring home, about 300 lbs. Overall, it was a great experience. (There is a Safeway in town for incidentals---and a liquor store. We made our own cocktails in the evening and congregated in the open area living room).

My family and some friends were up to AK and I made a huge mistake by booking Hill, do not fish with this guy. There are so many other professional, fun and entertaining captains that will treat you like their valued customer. In the morning when we got on his boat, I joking asked if we were going to catch big halibut. Hill straight out and rude as hell told me his "customer" to get off his boat and that the trip was a combo trip and we were not going after big halibut. There were five us and we should have done that right then and there. I told him I was just planning to go fishing and have fun several times so he finely settled down and said that I could go on his combo trip. I rode out in the shotgun seat and talk with him on the way out, things seemed to be going well until I started releasing small halibut. I brought some halibut sent and Hill accused me of putting the sent in his reels because I was mad that I was not catching big halibut. He told me I could not fish anymore. Obviously I did not do that or even considered it. I was just catching & releasing small fish and trying to enjoy the day. After a few hours he said I could fish again after I had told him a few times that I would not do something like that. I caught a ling cod and then I was cut off from fishing again. Man it was a bad and long day and we were stuck on a boat with a complete AH. When we made it back to the dock, other Charters had herd about Hill cutting me off on the radio because he was bragging about it on the radio. On the dock, captains and crew from other boats said Hill is a nut job and cant keep a crew because he treats them so badly and other "Customers" have bad experiences with Hill. By the way, this bad day happened years ago and I will never forget that bad day with Hill. I live in AK (local), own my own ocean boat and fish regularly, sometimes I go on a charter in a group. Bottom line. There are very professional Captains in the Seward, Homer and Whittier fleet and you will have a great time with them. Read the trip advisory reviews as they paint a good picture of what your experience will be. Don't fish with Hill and have a lifetime lasting memory the worst fishing day ever or maybe one of the worst days you have ever had. Hey, we go fishing to have fun, not be abused.

My group and I took an all day halibut charter in August on the boat 2 Day with Hill. There were sixteen people on the trip for a boat that comfortably holds 12/13. Some had to either stand for the two hours going to the fishing spot and another two coming back or else sit outside while it rained and was very cold even with jackets and hats on. Very crowded and uncomfortable. The boat is nice, however. But I'd still check to see how many he has scheduled before climbing on board. Hill, the captain, was very gruff about keeping his boat 'clean' and therefore, we were told not to touch or handle the bait. So we didn't. He was especially rude to his deck hand, Micah and very inappropriate comments were made in front of us regarding things he wanted Micah to be doing, which embarrassed not only Micah, but us as well. Hill wrote in a past comment section about how he is not there to make or be friends, and believe me he's holds to that. The bottom line for him (as insinuated in his list of Fishing with Hill points) is making money and that's that. Our group of seven did not get our limit. Only a child got two small halibut and the rest of us got one or none each. We did catch a couple of rock fish and a salmon, however. We were scolded if we didn't 'watch' our lines and at one point a lady's (from another group) line went across two of ours and he called it a catastrophe and was angry that we weren't watching the lines, when we were. Meanwhile his buddy's son was sound asleep in the cabin while his father fished his line as well as his own. He caught a shark for his son, but did release it. Anyway, overall, I'd say I would not charter my family on this boat, at least with this captain again. In a nutshell, the treatment of his deckhand, in front of us, and the crowded accommodations were the most inexcusable things about the trip and could/should have been avoided. Seward is a wonderful place to fish and have an awesome time. We cannot and will not let this bump in the road thwart our future outings in Seward and on future charters.

Response from Hill N, Owner at Hill Norvell Fishing

1. 16 people really.. I only take 14 clients. crew does not sit down and my deckhand stands up all day on the back deck. 2. Micah would disagree as he happily returned for his 2nd year of employment. Matter of fact I am even paying for half of his schooling this winter. I require my employees to work. Some quit and some don't. 3. Seating for 10 inside and covered seating for 3 under back cover. Anyone that want to hang out at the helm is welcome to stand up there. 4. Cold.. well it is Alaska, but to make things better I have a diesel stove for heat in cabin that is on 24/7. 5. Make money, yes it is a business. I do care about clients they are the lifeblood to any business. 6. The child you mentioned in your group fish hard all day while the adults sat on there backside. The child completely outfished the adults with 2 halibut, 2 silver salmon and a rockfish all on a halibut only trip. The again it is fishing and not the grocery store. 7. My friends, clients were full paying customers and one of which went inside to sleep after catching a 105 lb halibut. 8 The weather was calm and actually pretty nice that day. Not sure what y'all remember and don't forget the fact ya;ll gave dramamine to the 5 yr old just to get him out of your way. Horrible. Yes, horrible trip for all involved. I can tell your memory is not very good either. Y'all, kept 7 halibut and released a few more. the 60 lber I released is because the person who claimed it could not legally keep it as they already had theres. Believe me it is in my best interest to fill the box and I try my best. 9. Step on up and become a charter boat captain. Lets see how well you do. Many Blessings to ya'll and sorry for the bad trip but I will continue to do my best regardless of opinions. Sincerely, Capt. hill
