About
Originally these galleries were used as a quarry to extract a special type of fuller's earth for degreasing wool cloth (the wool cloth had a renowned deep blue almost black color and was much in demand during the Middle Ages). Once the cavities had been dug out, they became hiding-places, storerooms and also meeting places for various gatherings - some freemasons. Graffiti inscriptions, including Masonic symbols, testify to this. Guided tour only with 25 persons maximum for your own safety and to preserve the undergrounds. To be booked when purchasing ticket at the Tourist Office or in the monuments (except museum).

Provins is a great get away with friends for a day trip from Paris. We ended up taking an English tour for Souterrains de Provins. Overall, there is a great history in those caves but the guide we had was not interesting enough and ultimately we did not enjoy it as much as we could have!

It was okay. Caves all the way! The guide was friendly. It was interesting, just half an hour to spare discovering what’s under the town and why it was built that way. I enjoyed it. The tour was in French unfortunately so my partner couldn’t understand. It was a bit boring to him for obvious reasons. Take a jumper it get chilly down there!

Disappointed

My husband and I were only two non French speakers in the tour 4pm. Could not understood single word might be okay, nor felt comfortable with the tour guide , especially she told us "don't scratch wall of the cave by nails"in English. I visited many more caves in France, and other countries, never had such insulted experience. Don't like the way being treated there

When hot it’s a cool place, relax and enjoy details and histories given by the guide ( very good indeed). Take time to discover story , old wines storage, graffiti... and respect the place. Very nice moment with kids or teenagers.

Why in French only?!?

Pity, as it could have been an interesting tour once one knew what the guide was talking about. They only have English-speaking guides at weekends and only for limited times.. with so many foreigners coming to this lovely city, they should have thought about it!!!and you cannot do it on your own, as it is guided tour (€4,50) Interesting, though not spectacular.. quite a chilly break from the summer heat ;)

Despite the effort of the guide....

The most boring 45 minutes imaginable. The guide was good at entertaining the children and deserves credit for this. But if you are an adult then compared to all the marvellous sights and places France has to offer this is dismal. A series of tunnels with possible graffiti from the 17th and 18th centuries. Could not wait to get out!

Interesting for adults, kids were bored

Interesting visit for adults but the youngsters were bored and didn't like the dark caves very much. However the guided tour was included in our £35 family pass (4 attractions in provins for 2adults and 2 children) and didn't break the bank. It took approx 30 - 40 minutes

May be it is interested place, but the tour was only in French

We vizited the underground gallery on Tuesday and the guide was only in French. We did not understand nothing. If you planed to vizit this place and if you don't speak French, better go in the weekend when there's a tour in English

Waited for an English tour. What followed was a ghastly imprisonment underground with a guide who read from a book and tried to speak English. I am confident the tour was no better in French. There were some words about the tunnels' graffiti, and free masons were mentioned. I think that if I marked the walls myself it would make it on the next tour. Our entire group, French speakers included, breathed an audible sigh of relief as we left. Can't believe we paid for this. AVOID!!!

This visit was really worth it! The guide was great and the facts were interestingly presented to the audience! Furthermore, the stories about the franc-maçon were fascinating! Do not skip this attraction!
