About
The Airborne Museum, situated in the square of Sainte-Mere-Eglise, a few miles from D-Day landing beaches, facing the church where John Steele famously was caught, relates the heroic adventure of paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Division. Through a spectacular museography, the Airborne Museum takes you through the D-Day alongside American paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Division. From the invasion preparations in England through the battles for liberation, meet the Airborne troops and accompany them on their journey to Victory.

In short: the visit is clearly worth it, regardless of your age or your level of knowledge about D-Day.
To make it longer: I found the different exhibitions very well done, I really liked the museography: modern, didactic, including different depths of explanation.
The “Histopad” tablet is clearly worth it, it allows you to explore certain themes in more depth, without taking over the explanations displayed in the Museum. This allows a visit at your own pace, and to quickly "sort" the elements that you want to explore in more depth, and those that you want to leave aside, due to lack of time (or energy).
My favorite installations: the holographic order data of the “C-47” pavilion, the immersive passage in the plane of the “Neptune” pavilion!

After driving alongside those memorial Invasion Beaches, the last one was at Utah-Beach, after that a larger area into where many paratroopers landed (after jumping out of "Dakotas"), Sainte Mere Eglise area & it's openair monument, finally found this large Museum, Airborne Museum. Fantastic show rooms, film, and atmosphere of "quiet before landing" feelings,, several hours before the main Invasion has started. It must have been totally different, compared later, when thousands of guns started to fire and battles begin? One kind of Best of Art style to introduce historic moments.

The museum was the first meeting with the information about D-day in Normandy. The museum focuses specifically on the subjects related to the air force and this seen from the Allied side. The museum offers a limited view of the events of D-Day. You can see it as a starting point to then continue along the coast to visit other museums. Information is shown in 2 languages (FR - EN).

The museum is particularly well equipped with materials. But June 6 is a long way away. Some veterans aged almost 100 years present were unable to bring life to this gigantic confrontation.
The museum is well organized, but today too static. The soul is lost. It is the prerogative of time passing. Only those who know history, who live it, can understand. D day is too far away.

We had heard good things about this museum so we decided to go. We drove over 4 hours to come to come here. By the time we got here it was 6 o-clock one hour before closing. However the lady refused our entry saying that she couldn’t let us in due to the tills being closed. Even after she saw my brother in tears crying. Very bad experience. Not coming back.

Complete archi museum. Very well designed by theme. A lot to see and learn. Fun enough for the kids to interest them. Ideally located next to the church. Really to do.

We were very pleasantly surprised at how good the Airborne Museum is! Very well kept. Massive amount of exhibits both inter-active and to view. The centre pieces of the C45 and glider are superb. Well worth an afternoon's visit.

The overall layout is good and exhibits interesting. Many explanatory panels cannot be read as they are red text in an unlit area. The pads were glitzy but for us of little use and heavy to cart around. Poor translations and errors in commentary were to be found across all areas. Did I hear C47 jumbo 'jets' on one film? You decide! Have visited many museums of WW2, this was average.

My wife and I visited the museum after touring the town of Ste. Mere Egleise. We did this on our on. We did not have a guide and made the battlefield tours on our time schedule. We spent 5 days in the area and I will be the first to say that if you are a WWII buff or a true history buff this is not enough time to go to each of the areas and soak in the details.
The museum is full of artifacts that are true to the era. I was a member of the 82d Airborne Division and knew the history coming in to the museum but I was not ready for the artifacts that were assembled there. It was wonderful with what I call true content. I enjoyed all of it to include the audio in the C47s are we walked about. I spent about 5 hours here and had to be prodded to leave by my wife. She had us on a schedule and as a history nut of D day I did not have enough time in the museum. (Sorry Sheila). This one really told the story. I appreciated the ability to go aboard a glider. I was assigned to the 1st of the 319th Field Artillery of the 82d and had I been there in WWII I would have ridden a glider into combat.
One of the best museums of military history in the world. I want go back now that the 75th Anniversary celebrations are over. My wife and I were hurried because of the preparations for the 75th anniversary not by the museum but by other venues.
The Gift shop has many gifts that Airborne troops would love to possess.
I cannot say enough good about this museum.
One final note. Anyone that knows any history about that fateful night of the 82d jump will know there was a fire in a house and barn. The museum sits on the site of this unfortunate fire which is across the street from the church where Pvt. Steele got entangled in the church spire. In the movie the Longest Day Red Buttons played Pvt. Steele. Pvt Steele's effigy still hangs from a spire albeit a different more photogenic position that where he landed.
Loved the whole are and the people love the 82d and 101st troops. Go, go, go go. I will make this jump again.

As a former paratrooper in the 82d Airborne, I have long desired to visit the D-Day drop zones and Sainte Mere-Eglise. Therefore it was with great anticipation that I approached those venues earlier this month on a trip,to France. Simply walking the ground where brave men tread 71 years ago was almost a reverential experience. But I did not anticipate how much the Airborne Museum would add to that experience. It is indeed a first rate, visitor friendly museum that captures the spirit of the airborne invasion in June 1944. With its historically accurate dioramas and genuine artifacts, it has something to offer both the neophyte and informed historian. I am aware of no other museum that has both a full scale glider and C-47 aircraft (the 82d Airborne Museum at Fort Bragg only has half of a glider). My only negative comment is that some of the soldier mannequins appear to be a bit feminine which not even blackened camouflage paint can cover up. This deficit should be corrected by the curators. Otherwise, this is a museum not to be missed.

My wife and I will be there at the beginning of June. Should we buy tickets ahead of time? Because of the big crowds, could we risk not getting in?
Written 22 May 2019
It will be pandemonium this year because it is the 75th anniversary memorials. No matter what you do, or where you go, it is going to be very crowded. Be prepared. There are many wonderful sights to visit in the area, so enjoy.

If you have a relative who fought as a member of the Airborne then definitely visit this museum! It is a truly wonderful experience and certainly worth it if you have the time.
If your relative fought elsewhere in the area or as part of the landing forces, there are a number of museums dedicated to the various sectors and units. I was told by a local tour guide that the Utah museum is especially good.
If you are looking for a more general overview, I would suggest the Museum of the Battle of Normandy in Bayeux.

Thanks so much for all the answers on my last question about the AM. Alas, I wasn't specific enough what I meant to ask was:
Is it easy to get to by public transport from Bayeux? I can't drive. :)
Written 23 December 2016
We also booked a tour thru Overlord and the museum was covered in the tour
