Scenic Byway Supreme

The trip from Seward to Anchorage along the Seward Highway with breath taking views of mountains, glaciers and the cook inlet is among the best Alaska has to offer.

Beautiful Drive
Jul 2021
The Drive south from Anchorage along Cook Inlet has amazing views of scenery and wildlife. A number of pull off viewing sites along the way.

Check this out on a map- it's huge.

Cook Inlet goes from "Turnagain Arm" to the wide open Pacific. The "Arm" section goes inland but it's not really navigable; it's all mud flats. The Pacific side empties into the Pacific near Homer. No wonder Captain Cook thought that this body of water would take him across to the north Atlantic.

Loved visiting the Inlet when I lived there and still loved visiting it 26 years later! Sunset is the best time to visit because the sky is amazing!

Anchorages Connection to the Ocean
Jul 2020
Anchorage is situated on the south shore of Cook Inlet's south shore. Not the most scenic inlet due to its high tides with extensive mud flats but the dramatic surrounding mountain views are breathtaking.

This area is so beautiful! If you are driving from Anchorage, you won't regret stopping to view the Cook Inlet and possibly see beluga whales!

Worth the drive
Feb 2020
Cook inlet is a bit of a drive and traffic can really back up during the summer months. But its still worth the drive. The bay is amazing. I had the pleasure to be there during the winter and witness "break up" when the ice breaks into big chunks with loud bangs....scary and amazing. Just don't walk out into the bay...summer or winter. The silt is really thick and the tidal change fast. Be smart and stay on the roadway. But its truly breathtaking...and you can see mountain goats on the hills and belugas in the bay. Certainly a story worth repeating for the next 20 years. Go...you owe it to yourself.
