The Gene Leahy Mall has been demolished, and a new park will be constructed in it's place. There are a lot of things to do and see in Omaha, but the mall is NOT one of them.

When I went, before the renovations ( was back in 2016 - 2017) it was a very nice little park with walking trails around the pond and people would have their lunches there (those who worked downtown). The slide in the picture was pretty awsome; would take my grandchildren there. Had to find a piece of cardboard to shide really fast. I also been ther in the winters months when all the trees were filled with christmas lights. Very pretty.

The Gene Leahy mall has been demolished and will be rebuilt into a green space. Right now it is just construction equipment and lots of noise.

Construction is taking place in gene Leahy Mall in the entire place is fenced off. You cannot access the slides, or walk around anywhere in the mall. They are flattening it. I'm not sure when the construction is said to be done, but once it's done it's just going to be a big concrete slab. It's so heartbreaking to see such a beautiful place go.

We revisited the Gene Leahy Mall, on our recent May trip to Omaha for the Creighton University Medical School Graduation. It was much different this visit. It appeared that almost the entire length of the Gene Leahy Mall was being rebuilt. Instead of the little waterway, leading from about 17th St, to the Heartland of America Park, it was dry, and probably the only part of Omaha, which was dry. The clear weather, to which we had arrived, had turned to rain, and dense clouds. This May was certainly a time, that Omaha did not need any more rain, as many areas were already flooded. It appeared, from our walk, mostly around Gene Leahy Mall, that the entirety of that linear park was being redone, from the beginning near 17th St, all of the way to the Heartland of America Park, where the water feature in Gene Leahy Mall terminates. There were construction barricades for most of the length, and it appeared that the Park was being completely redone. I could not tell if there were to be additions, or if this was structural reconstruction, but it was everywhere. I anticipate that the weather, and the near-by flooding, had slowed the construction work, and am not sure when, or how quickly it will be completed. For us, on this rainy day, the Gene Leahy Mall was just a muddy construction site, but having spent time there in the past, and projecting a bit on the work in progress, which I saw, I think that it will once more be a grand, linear park, and likely even better than it was. I hope that the flooding abates, and that the work can be completed in a timely manner, and that on our visit next May, we can stroll this lovely mall.
