Founded in 1981, by artists for artists, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts supports today's artists through an international artist-in-residence program, temporary exhibitions and commissions, and innovative public programs. Located in the historic Old Market district, the Bemis Center serves a critical role in the presentation and understanding of contemporary art, bridging the community of Omaha to a global discourse surrounding cultural production today. Artist-in-Residence Program For more than three decades, the Bemis Center's core mission has been to provide artists from around the world dedicated time, space, and resources to conduct research and to create new work. Frequently cited as one of the top international residency programs, the Bemis Center offers artists private live/work studios, financial support, technical/administrative assistance, and opportunities for intellectual discourse about contemporary art through free public programs, such as panel discussions, lectures, and knowledge-sharing workshops. To date, nearly 900 artists have participated in the residency program. Exhibitions Program The Bemis Center's exhibition program features solo and group exhibitions of artwork in all media by local, national, and international artists. Exhibitions are always free, open to the public, and frequently introduce the community of Omaha to the most experimental and provocative art forms today. Community Engagement Program Over the organization's 35-year history, the Bemis Center has offered artist-driven, community-responsive programs that bolster civic engagement in the creation and understanding of art. Ranging from public murals and artist-led classes and workshops, to the creative-placemaking project Carver Bank, by artist Theaster Gates, community engagement programs provide regular opportunities for the public to learn about and be inspired by the visual arts. Through ARTalks, workshops, Open Studio events, panel discussions, film screenings, and performances, the public has direct access to artists and to their diverse approaches to art making and interpreting the world around us.

The Bemis Center is located among other galleries in the Old Market District, this gallery has constantly changing exhibits of quite a few artists. Worth visiting when doing the galleries in the area.

Really enjoyed our visit to this arts center. Cool old space which has been redone, excellent gallery space. Obvious quality artist work being exhibited here. In a way the building reminded me of the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, not nearly as large. Exhibits were small and easy to navigate.

The Bemis Center is impressive. Tucked into the Old Market cluster in downtown Omaha, there's a lot bubbling inside. We were greeted cordially by the volunteer at the desk, and shown into the "Collapse" exhibit on the impact of ecological disaster, which proved to be a perfect challenge to the beauty and wonder of our morning Henry Doorly Zoo visit.... The Bemis Center is truly a contemporary arts center. The exhibits I saw there on June 24th were by local artists and a New York artist who is in residence at the time. The works were interesting and challenging. This is definitely not a museum in the sense of curating the past, but of presenting what is current. It doesn't... More

This is an art hibernation center there are several artists perfecting their trade. You will see all sorts of stuff and pick up bargains for lovely pieces of art.

On May 29, when I visited, the girl receptionist said only rooms #1 and #2 had exhibits. One room had a giant art-work consisting of hundreds of roof shingles, flexed and stapled together to form a giant wave pattern. The other work was a similar giant wave pattern, only using hundreds of thin cardboard strips flexed and stapled together. I... More

I went on a date here, with an artist who was displayed in the Art Auction. The place was very clean, the front desk girl was VERY nice helping us find what we were looking for. Don't miss the Underground area. Lesser known artists, but all very good, and worth seeing. The man made rainbow at the end of it,... More

I went the beginning of August and the girl at the desk gave little information as if it was obvious of what one should look at. I wondered around and saw a lot of empty spaces and a sign to a gallery shop. There was some art on the walls but no prices and not much to tell you that... More

Scheduled a tour 2 days in advance via email and it was neat to see the galleries and an empty studio. I was disappointed that we did not get to see the studio of a current artist in residence but the director explained that none of them were prepared for visitors due to the last minute nature of our tour....
