The Cathedral at Skálholt is another example of the simple beauty of Icelandic church architecture. Compared with the crowds at the Hallgrimskirkja, Skalholt is much more quiet and offers an ideal opportunity for contemplation. The stained glass windows are magnificent in the setting Winter sun,...More

It is well worth a visit when you are in Iceland. A very interesting history here. Leave the Cathedral via the secret passage.

Whilst this is a modern church, its simplicity and design make it more impressive than first impressions might reveal. It is also odd that it is a fairly isolated cathedral both in location and with respect to other buildings.

What made this stop great was not this pretty but humble 1950's remake of the first Icelandic church, but our bus driver gave us a trumpet solo of "Ave Maria"and "Hallelujah". What a bonus!

Don't waste time here, keep your route, there is way to much to see and do in Iceland. This place does not offer anything of culture, history, arts or entertainment whatsoever.

If nearby, it's worth a stop as the setting is beautiful. However, as opposed to the ornate cathedrals of Europe, this is a simple "country" church. It does have some rich history and a crypt you can pay to tour, but otherwise just views

We stopped at the cathedral on our Golden Circle trip. It was a very short distance off the normal path (less than 5 minutes). The church has information about it's historical significance. It is a nice place to admire nature in a quiet setting. Along...More
