About
The LAVA Centre features an interactive exhibition exploring the art and science of geology and the volcanic systems in Iceland. Information from the past century’s eruptions demonstrates just how strong the presence of volcanoes has in contemporary Iceland. Feel the forces of nature as you experience an earthquake and see the Fiery Heart of Iceland, a 12 m high structure simulating the Mantle plume and the magma flow underneath Iceland. In an educational learning centre, you can explore the wonders of volcanoes and earthquakes through interactive computers and there’s also a cinema auditorium where visitors can see the magnificence of volcanic eruptions in HD 4K. Please note that the last entry into the exhibition is at 16:30 and the movie is at 16:40. The exhibition closes at 17:00.

Stopped in here on our trip to Iceland. Very informative. Loved the video. Some interactive exhibits. Don’t know that it’s a “must” when in Iceland but it was informative.

We were travelling around Iceland on our own and visited the museum before adventuring closer to many of the volcanoes. The exhibit and film really helped us to understand the context of the area and Iceland's volcanic history - past, present, and future - especially the details that we weren't previously familiar with. The exhibit is very interactive and engaging to learn about the different types of volcanoes and magma/lava flows. We were surprised that it was not only interactive but somewhat immersive by incorporating multiple senses into the experience. We spent about 75 minutes to watch the film and wander through the exhibit rooms, reading most of the information available. We chose to do the viewing platform last, which helped to incorporate the information from the exhibit into the surroundings. We would recommend stopping here and taking your time to learn about Iceland's volcanoes past, present, and future.

We were staying in Hella, and visited the museum early on in our trip, which was a great choice, because it gave us the context for Iceland's geology and volcanic history before we saw it up close and personal. We learned about the different types of volcanos and lava flows with very effective and interactive exhibits. The sights, sounds and information were top-notch. We spent an hour there, but could have probably spent another 30-40 minutes if we had more time. If you are in the Hella are or touring the South Coast, I would recommend stopping here.

So good! Really unassuming from the front but the interactive exhibits and up to the minute updates on the active volcanoes was amazing

Quick stop but informative and fun. Enjoyed learning about the earthquake activity and seeing the recent tracking of it. Not huge, but they do also have a nice gift shop.

We came here as a part of a group tour. It was informative and interactive, pretty kid friendly. I'm not sure I would have come here on my own, though. The views from above are stunning--the views everywhere in Iceland are stunning.

For £60, this was very overpriced and uninformative. Earthquake simulator was awful. Would not recommend unless you want an expensive pit stop, I would just continue driving in hindsight

From the overview map on the table, the constantly-updating earthquake stats on the wall, to the movie, this place is fantastic. So much information on tectonics, types of eruptions and the topography they cause. It is a must-stop to get a great appreciation on just what the heck is going on literally all around you as we were completing the ring road with Nordic Visitor tours.

I found the experience highly educational and high tech. It was great to learn more about volcanoes and how they shaped Iceland. The staff was also very helpful. It was a nice day too, so we were able to spot some of the volcanoes from their rooftop.
