Welcome to Harvard Square

Each year, over 8 million men, women and children visit Harvard Square. Visitors come for a variety of reasons; this is a place of history, of books, of ideas, and of learning. It is a place of bookstores and coffee houses, of fine dining and eclectic shopping. It is a place of folk music and old theaters, of Cuban ballet and world-class music, of street-performers and award-winning pizza, of public discourse, and public art. Whatever brings you here, we welcome you and hope you enjoy your stay.

We stumbled into a small eatery called Flat Patties (33 Brattle St) which has no website that I could find, but the pub lunch food and low prices were a pleasant surprise. Hamburgers in the $4-6 range, grilled chicken sandwich for $4, Yuengling lager pint for $3.

There are restaurants and stores but nothing exceptional. The grave yard and old church are interesting but most of the "square" is just commercial.

Harvard Square has always been pretentious. But it used to be pretentious in a locally interesting, funky way. Since the decline of rent control, the fassive gentrification of the Boston area and other catastrophes, it's become the home to a bunch of boring you-can-find-this-anywhere outlets like the Gap or Urban Outfitters. Nothing wrong with those stores, but I can shop... More

It has something for everyone, from high brow to just shopping. The Bookstore is awesome. Every book you could ever want. The staff is really into books... More

Harvard Square still boasts Harvard Yard (just behind it), with its charming freshman dorms and departmental and administrative buildings, some dating back to the 1700s. And Harvard's river houses (dorms for upperclassman along the Charles River) are worth seeing, as is the Charles itself at this bend of the river. However, student dining and purchasing habits combined with an historically... More
