First the logistics: The museum is always free. Thursdays they are open until 9:00 pm and there is always something going on such as a jazz concert in the restaurant. Parking doesn't have to cost you anything if you park on the street. I had no problem finding a spot. The two restaurants are terrific and the prices are reasonable.... More

What a fabulous museum, it is VERY well curated! Well thought out, well structured and incorporates an outdoor area and old plantation history just beautifully! And best of all? It's FREE! 2 great places to eat as well and on a sunny day a sweeping lawn and water pools to picnic and relax, as well as a fantastic gift shop.... More

VFMA is a beautifully designed building that has rotating art exhibits that you must see. Some are subdued, and many knock your socks off. Really important to see. And the restaurants are truly top notch. Well worth traveling to Richmond just for the exhibits and food!

Having never been here before, I really had no expectations going in. I was pleasantly surprised with the range of exhibits, from the ancient to the modern, with some very good examples of American and European paintings, tapestries and more. The crowd on a Saturday was very manageable. The Mrs loved the Schlumberger jewelry exhibit (natch) and both of us... More

…about the majority of their collections and the methods of display surround any visit to the VMFA. There is very little in the European art sections that does not constitute a gifted group of works of art, and where the museum has not been the beneficiary of such collectors, it shows – badly. These collections are mostly now shown together... More

Richmond may not be a major city but the Virginia Museum of Fine Art performs like a major museum. We just drove down for the Jasper Johns and Edvard Munch exhibition which was installed in cooperation with the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway. it is outstanding. Having visited the Munch in Oslo some years ago, some of these works were... More

Easy to navigate. The permanent exhibits are on par with the NYC MET. Check out the life size Calligula statue, one of only two in the world. There are two restaurants - one is a quick cafe with an indoor & outdoor section that overlooks the water. The other restaurant requires a reservation.

The VMFA has a surprisingly good collection for a city this size, and its new wing is beautiful. The museum is in a lovely part of town, full of beautiful houses, great shopping, and terrific restaurants. Definitely worth a visit.

My husband, friends and I attended the Jasper Johns Edvard Munch show and were truly surprised as to how we all absorbed so much from the show. It was very impressive!

From the special exhibitions like the Rodin exhibit and the Edvard Munch/ Jasper Johns show to the excellent Faberge and decorative arts collection and a wonderful survey of European and American art this gem of a museum has something for everyone. Don't miss the outdoor sculptures including those by Chihuly and Henry Moore- well laid out, spacious and worth repeated... More
