Fortaleza de Peniche was built in 1557 by King John 111. It was one of Portugal major defence forts until the 19th century. The views are outstanding & its a fabulous building to view & excellent for photo's.

We were able to walk around the outskirts of the fortress, but didn't go inside as it was closed. I don't know if this is worth it on it's own, but might be good to stop by if you happen to be in the area.

We had a very enjoyable stroll around the Old Fort and found the history interesting. The views are beautiful, and it is a fun area to explore if you are nearby. Little town of Peniche is essentially a surfing town with some beautiful beaches and...More

It's not open for visiting inside, however, is worthy to see from outside the wall and the little beach by its side.

Absolutely fascinating old fort which was transformed into a prison and held nearly 2000 political prisoners during the dictatorship in Portugal. The fort itself is a stunning piece of defence architecture but the museum housed in the former prison was absolutely fascinating. We spent over...More

Peniche is a small, very old town. Most od the buildings are broken and make a rotten impression. If someone likes this morbide flair you then you may be enthusiastic. There are no interesting shops except surf stores which you find one next to another....More

A very interesting place to visit , do not miss the museum with the anti fascist display and the former prisoners cells, it is a shame the woman at the museum desk is not nice and shuts the doors before closing time

Most of the places you visit in Portugal are related to history that took place hundreds of years ago. The fortress at Peniche deals with more recent - and less pleasant - history. The museum is dedicated to telling the story of the fortress' use...More

We visited the fort one evening before dinner. We didn't have time for the museum (in fact I am not sure it was even open) but just wandering around the building itself (which it seemed we could do free of charge) was enjoyable and atmospheric....More
