This is a second visit-terribly disappointing
Our original visit was one year ago and we didn’t finish it. We came back again to find most of the floors have been cleared of exhibits or only partial exhibits due to ongoing reconstruction work. Skip this venue until the refurbishment is completed.

    Great visit
My husband and I are relatively new to the area and had heard about the free self guided tour of the capitol. We were in the area and decided to give it a try. It was a really nice visit. They were doing quite a bit of construction while we were there, but it did not affect the tour too much. We were able to really enjoy the beauty of the building as well as the artwork. It is a free tour and really something everyone who lives in GA should experience.

Another US State Capitol check off by list
It's not a big building, but it's free to visit and tour. You start on the top floor which the museum portion of the capitol building, and you get to read about the city of Atlanta and government-related stuff like the process of how a bill becomes law. The third and second floors you can see portraits of past governors (and one of MLK Jr.), and you can also see the state house and senate chambers (we weren't able to go in, but you can see it through a window from the hallway). The walk around the grounds was nice, as you can see some statues throughout. I wouldn't say it's a huge priority if you were to visit, but if you want to say that you went to a state capitol, it's worth checking out.

    as Capitols go - average
I'm not a 50 state cpaitol nerd, but if I'm in the capitol city I'll often make thime and have probably toured maybe 20. This is average. The architecture fits the mold but does not stand out. The museum content is 'ok' but not more, and the portraits are appropriately state specific (found a very young looking Carter) Props that it is a still functional building but that limits what you can do with it as far as display/ accessibility. Street parking would have been a better solutuon than the rather expensive lot I ended up in, but that's on me, should have looked around more thoroughly. Visitor entrance is not intuitive when approaching the building. Yucked around the side at ground (basement) level.

    Nice state capitol
This is a very nice capitol building with a striking gold dome. There is a museum with all sorts of Georgia artifacts and displays on the top floor. It's always odd seeing Confederate statues in public spaces, but it is the South. Parking seems to be a bit scarce, but it's a short walk from the Georgia State MARTA station.

Average state capitol building and not much around the complex - but had some interesting exhibits
While visiting Atlanta, I had a sometime, so walked to the capitol building from my hotel in downtown. I had about hour before closing. The dome was under renovation which was too bad for photo of the building. There are several displays on the 4th floor as a museum where were interesting. There are some statues as well on the grounds. What made this visit enjoyable and 4 star instead 3, was while walking around I met a Chief of Staff of a prominent state senator who then showed my the senate chamber and gave me brief history of the state capitol, the senate and construction plans. So it made the visit interesting.

    Typical State Capitol
First there is not a lot of parking to be had in the general area. We ended up paying $14 to park. The building is typical of many state capitol buildings around the nation. There is also various historical exhibits inside the building turning it into a bit of museum... which I liked. We could not get a tour. Apparently Tuesday is the day the guide staff dust pictures and statues. I much prefer a guided tour through these places as the guides frequently impart tidbits I am not going to discover in the self-tour pamphlets. I am trying to visit all 50 state capitol buildings. Of the 35 I have visited so far, I would put this one somewhere in the lower half.

The outlook of the building if beautiful, similar to other state capitol buildings, have a dome shape top, grand stair, pillars inside. But the Senate and House meeting place is not opened, we just can see it through a tiny window on the doors.
There is museum on the top floor, showing not only the history, but also the natural things about GA.

It is free to enter. Self guided tour provided. There is a nice museum on the 4th floor with information about Atlanta. I also liked walking around the outer grounds to see the sculptures.

Again the South knows how to build impressive capitol buildings. It is a beautiful building with tall concrete columns making it so majestic. This is not even mentioning the gold dome that reminds me of the riches of the Land of the Free. The Georgia State Capitol is the picture that comes to my mind when I think of a state capitol. It is a historical landmark and a site to see. You have to look closely as there is a woman standing with a torch and a sword. I read somewhere that she weighs over 1600 pounds and is 26 feet tall. She obviously doesn't appear so large as size is distorted a she is so high up.

Things which may be helpful: 1) Atlanta traffic is famous for a reason, and parking is a problem once you get to the Capitol; 2) There are a couple of public lots for a flat fee of $10 near the building; 3) The website talks about tours at 11:00 but we found out that they only operate tours for groups of 10+; 4) You can walk throughout the building once you pass through security but the self-guided information is not very helpful; 5) The "museum" is mostly in the corridors and we found the material not well presented.

We stop at state capitols whenever we can. This building is not relatively impressive, and the lack of a tour made it hard to understand the history of the building or key milestones of the State. If you can get on a tour they run about 40 minutes. Also, the day we were there neither chamber was in session and, for some reason, they lock the doors so we couldn't even see the space. We saw as much as we could and it took a total of about 1.5 hours inside and outside.

Out of the 20 capitols we have seen we would rate this one average, at best. There is a lot to do in Atlanta so you will have to decide if this is worth the effort and time.
