Ricardo of Birding Holidays was an excellent local Spanish guide who spoke good English and went above and beyond expectations. I had a hitlist of 20 species in the Extremadura region during a 4-day stay and we found 18 of them in a total species list of 121. He was very knowledgeable of the birding sites across a wide area and was attentive to my partner and I's needs including long drives in search of some tricky species, and pick up and drop off at Madrid airport. Can also thoroughly recommend the Exe Alfonso VIII hotel in Plasencia as a well-priced comfortable base to stay. As a guided birding break, Birding Holidays proved to be an excellent and good value choice.

Ricardo is an excellent guide and is to be thoroughly recommended. I booked two days - on the plains and in Monfrague National Park - and Ricardo made so much effort to make sure that I saw the key birds that I'd come for, as well as finding as many species as he could over the course of the weekend. As well as Ricardo's immense knowledge of the region and the wildlife, his guided tours are very good value, considering the time he spends with you. I'd book again, for sure.

We enjoyed a terrific day with Ricardo who introduced us expertly to the wonderful bird life of Extramadura. He was great company and a very accomplished guide with a nice balance of directing and assisting, and with a real depth of knowledge. I would highly recommend Ricardo and would unhesitatingly use again.

We went 2 days on a birding trip with Ricardo and we had a fantastic time. He is a experienced guide with 'eagle' eyes. We saw so many birds, great and little bustard, blue rock trush, imperial eagle, eagle owl and so much more. We came to places we would never have found on our own. Not only did he know a lot about birds but he also showed us beautiful wild orchids. Birding Holidays is highly recommended.

Just back from 6 great days birding in Extremadura with Ricardo. His local knowledge is second to none and coupled with bird ID and amazing hearing meant we didn't miss a thing.
I would recommend him and will be back next year.

Two sessions of birding with Ricardo were well rewarded! A morning spent in Monfragüe was exceptionally good - seeing and observing 4 species of eagles (booted, golden, imperial and Bonelli’s), and 3 species of vultures (griffon, Egyptian and the black). Among the swifts, he pointed out the differences between the pallid and alpine - not easy - and were disappointed not to see the white-rumped nesting in the castilla de Monfragüe. We were very pleased to see the blue rock thrushes, also to see and hear the subalpine warblers!
The evening in the pine forest was rewarded when a red-necked nightjar flew and settled obligingly for a few minutes in front of the vehicle! We saw many Iberian hares scurrying around in the forest. In a more parkland, we heard the elusive Scops owl who was determined to stay hidden that windy night.
Ricardo’s extensive knowledge of birds, wild life and nature was most impressive. His enthusiasm and passion was so infectious, that we feel we must return to see more! His English is good. We have no hesitation in recommending Ricardo as one of the best guides we have come across. Thank you so much, Ricardo.

In spain, I visited many birdwatching-spots on my own and never booked a guide. In the extremadura, it is not so easy to find all the spots on your own, so I decided to book a guide. I spent 1 week in the extremadura and two days with ricardo. ricardo made it possible for me to see all the birds i wanted to see, he is very very experienced and knows a lot about the local "bird-scene". He took long ways and drives for me, just to make sure that i will get the best. I am sure it would have taken me a long time to find these birds on my own.Thank you a lot, ricardo. So, if you look for a professional bird-guide, here he is!

I have been a serious birder since the 1990’s and have travelled extensively in the UK, across Europe from Portugal to Hungary, in the Middle East and North Africa. I have written articles for UK national magazines on birds and edited the quarterly magazine for my local bird club for many years. I have been on numerous guided bird trips both in the UK and abroad with some of the best bird guides in the UK and elsewhere.

I first met Ricardo on 10th June, 2011, in the Monfrague National Park in Extremadura, Spain, when I was on a birding trip and he was surveying visitors to the park by one of the hotspots for seeing vultures and other birds. I soon realised his extensive knowledge of birds as he identified to me birds in the area both by sound and by sight.

I was so impressed that I asked him to guide me on a trip into the mountains nearby to find birds I would have difficulty in locating on my own. We agreed a half day (four hour) trip on 12th and we started in Plascencia and travelled to the Sierra Begar in search of birds which I had not already seen. The trip confirmed my estimation of Ricardo’s skill in locating and identifying a range of birds and I saw several “Lifers” as well as a number of birds I had not already seen on that trip to Spain. He showed a determination to find good birds for me to see.

I found him a most pleasant man who was easy to get on with and who was honest and straightforward. He has a good command of English and knew the English names of all the birds we saw. The four hour trip lasted nearly six hours and, although he did not ask for extra money, I was pleased to pay him more than he asked because I was so pleased with the success of the trip and the number of birds that I saw.

In August, 2011, I welcomed Ricardo to England and he stayed with me in my home. I was pleased to have him visit me. We went to various birding sites in England and Wales and I found him some birds not seen in Spain.

The following year he invited me to go on a joint trip to look for good birding spots in the Donana area of Southern Spain, the Algarve area of Portugal and other nearby areas. I stayed in his family flat beforehand and we used his car for the whole trip. I got to meet his family and was made to feel very welcome. We used his car for the whole trip and stayed together in hotels, so I got to know him very well. We had an excellent time and saw some very good birds. Nothing I saw or heard him do on that extended trip changed my mind either about him personally or about his undoubtedly good birding skills.

I have no hesitation in recommending Ricardo for his birding skills, his grasp of English, his determination to find good birds and his pleasant character. He is amongst the best of the many guides I have met.

The date is not as shown below - it would not allow me to put the earlier date

I have always wanted to have a spring break on the Continent to see birds which are either rare vagrants to the UK or never reach our shores. One of the best places in Europe to do this is Extramadura and one of the best guides in Europe, Ricardo Montero, lives and works there guiding birdwatchers from all over the world ! I only spent a few days with Ricardo but saw all my target species and much more ... notably Rufous Bush Robin, Rufous Tailed Rock Thrush & White Rumped Swift ... real specialities of the region and very difficult to see without an expert guide like Ricardo.

I wanted to visit in mid Spring when all the migrants would be active building nests and feeding young but there is always something to see whatever time of year you visit Spain and engage a guide like Ricardo - I have also visited In January to see the Iberian Lynx with Ricardo but that's another story ! Whatever you do you will have a great wildlife experience with Ricardo as your guide.

I have never seen so many different birds in one day. Even if it was foggy we saw a lot of birds. Eagles, kites, great bustard, cranes and a lot of small birds too.
Ricardo is very nice company, and I enjoyded my day and have learned more about birds and the landscape around Caceres. If you go birding in Extremendura, You can´t get a better guide. It cost 140 euro for a whole day, and it is the best money I have ever spended on a holyday

It has been a great pleasure to know you. Weather has not been the best but in an other hand we were lucky enaugh with the birds. My highlight of the day was the Eagle Owl siting on the pilot beside the road...only 10 m amazing! Surely my best sighting of this species. I´m really glad you enjoyed. All the best Ricardo
