Big Thunder Gold Mine has an original tour which lasts 45-55 minutes and was founded in 1892. You see the largest display of mining equipment in the Black Hills and learn the history of the gold rush in 1876. We have two forms of panning: one is our commercial panning right on site. Guides will demonstrate theskill of panning, no time limit and we guarentee you will find gold. We also have claim panning where you will pan directly our of the creek 4 miles down the road on Forest Service property. Those exist in 4 hour trips.

We had never been in a cave. Our intelligent experienced guide told us so much. Also about people playing important parts in Keystones history. We learned all about the cave and mining process. Then, you can pan for gold in the front. Great fun!

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Big Thunder Gold Mine in Keystone. The guide the not only knowledgeable & informative, but had a wonderful sense of humor. We visited there with the grandkids, ages 5 & 11 and it really kept their interest. The tour is not too long and quite pleasant. We learned a lot in a short period... More

Our guide,Jesse, took us on a tour of an actual gold mine and related the story of the two miners who had mined it. Fascinating and he did a great job answering our questions. I will never envy gold miners again! Also tried panning for gold. Didn't spend much time at it but found a bit of gold. The giftshop... More

The tour in the mine was really interesting and informative. It was amazing to hear how determined these guys were to find gold. We also did the gold panning part there. I don't know if it was because it was close to close time, but he (sorry don't remember his name) showed us how to do the panning once and... More

This was a great looking place with a fascinating history. My daughter and husband went gold panning while we toured the mine. Great visit, gave me a good understanding of what it must have been to be a miner in the early days after the gold rush. The most intriguing was the commitment to the dream. Great guide too :)

We went there because we wanted to pan for gold. you pay 10 dollars for a pan of sand and they walk you over to a water tank. The employee i got was very unfriendly and dismissive. My hadn't panned before an I was excited to have him get some gold. After we finished our pans, I got a few... More
