About
Wye Valley Canoes, est. 1968, are specialists in canoe hire and kayak hire on the River Wye. We were one of the first companies to launch boats on the River Wye, and each year we help new generations of paddlers get away from it all for a couple of hours or a couple of days on one of the UK’s most-loved stretches of water. Based in Glasbury, at the foot of the spectacular Black Mountains, we offer Half day and Full day canoe trips as well as tailor-made Multiple Day Canoeing Expeditions. Whether you are a complete novice looking for a fun, family day out, or an experienced paddler looking to take on the full 100 miles of the River Wye, our experienced team will get you set up and on the water - and pick you up at the other end - so all you have to worry about is who’s in charge of steering the boat.

We are on holiday near Hay for the week and called up and Wye Valley Canoes were very accommodating and found us a space for the next day.
There were 9 of us, 4 adults, 1 teen and 4 kids and we wanted to have a half day from Glasbury to Hay.
We met up at 9 and had a safety briefing and were instructed how to to basic paddle manoeuvres. We’d paid for a guided tour and we were given two guides, Fred and Chris and they couldn’t have been better guides.
They were great at supporting us as novices all the way through and made it fun with rest breaks and fun games.
We got two gos at the rapids and even when the kids got scared at some bits they knew just how to cheer them up and they really made the whole experience really great for us all. We’d recommend these guys and hopefully will be back one day. Thank you guys!

Friendly, fantastically efficient team and just the best way to spend a day. In an already busy season, the booking process is seamless and responses are pretty much instant.

I live locally and have been twice in the past week once when it was cloudy and once in blazing sunshine - both trips were fab. Thank you!

One of the best mini adventures we’ve ever had! The stretch of river between Glasbury and Hereford is absolutely stunning and so peaceful. Josh at WVC was super helpful and knowledgeable, especially helping us with our itinerary for the three days, so we felt in safe hands even though we were on our own in the boat. We can’t wait to book our next trip!

Although we didn’t go canoeing here, 16 of us did stay for the weekend in the boathouse accommodation, and I have mixed views on my experience. On the one hand, the bunkhouse is beautifully decorated with everything we needed for a great weekend (including a slide between floors - Who doesn’t want that?!). On the other hand though, the management of the whole trip was awful and left us with sour tastes in our mouths. Sadly they tried (and succeeded) to rip us off by adding extra charges at the last second - by conveniently telling us that even though we’d paid in full, that didn’t include the extra rooms we’d booked in the river cafe. They can’t even make up their minds how much these charges were or even what they are for at times (eg charging for extra rooms vs people per room).

The most annoying thing that the manager kept doing though, was turning up unannounced, and uninvited, Letting herself in and lurking around. She scared the life out of me by standing outside the bathroom when I wasn’t expecting it. A simple knock at the door wouldn’t go amiss there.

All in all, it’s a lovely place, but very poorly managed. And I think until this is resolved, I won’t be returning.

Usually with reviews we do not comment as we believe everyone is more than entitled to voice their own opinion but I am afraid when things are just not correct I feel I have to put the record straight! I have just spoken to the organiser of your group who said you all had a brilliant time and does not share your opinion. The bunkhouse is one fee for 14 people. If you want extra rooms in the café we charge these per person. We were very flexible about whether you were going to need the extra rooms or not so did not charge you for these before your arrival as the group leader was unsure how many were actually coming. It was agreed with the group leader prior to your arrival how much we would charge per person. Secondly our Manager only visited the bunkhouse ONCE whilst you were there and this was because your group did not understand how to work the Bluetooth speaker and they asked her to come up to the bunkhouse. Finally, we service the bunkhouse daily and our housekeeping staff asked the group whether it was convenient to clean and they said it was. Our member of staff from the housekeeping team came up the stairs with a mop and I think that is when you saw her but this had been cleared by the rest of the group. So your comments of us ripping you off and lurking around really could not be further from the truth. I am glad the rest of your party all enjoyed their stay with us. It certainly looked as though you had some fun judging by the photos!

Absolutely awful. We arrived and the floors were dirty,
it states there’s towels on the website only to turn up and they are hand towels. For something that costs nearly £1400 for a weekend it’s shocking. My mum left a valuable item that she knew she left on her bed then ended up going missing so we tried contacting them for them to never answer phone calls and take ages to reply to emails, eventually when they answered they said the cleaner had cleaned top to bottom and it hadn’t turned up which i find hard to believe because they place was dirty when we got there. They say they are busy with the canoes which is why they didn’t answer so if that’s the case have a separate contact for the bunkhouse so people who stay there can have a proper professional experience when trying to get in contact about something urgent.

I am sorry we have not found your mum's kindle although we did take the mattress off the bed and looked everywhere for it. Your mum did say to one of our staff that she couldnt remember if she had brought it or not so perhaps by now you have found it. We did forward to you two rings that we found which I hope you got. I did check the emails and you left on 4th August and we had sent you two emails by 5.15pm on the 4th about the kindle so hopefully we did not take as long as you thought to get back to you. In the bunkhouse only bed linen is provided and towels need to be brought from home. All this information is on your Air BnB booking form. On our website (and I have just checked it) it does not say towels are included in the bunkhouse. If you had asked us at the time we would happily have provided towels for you. It is meticulously cleaned after every guest. I hope despite a lack of towels and a lost kindle you enjoyed your stay.

The Wye Valley Canoes are a lovely family run business. We booked a group outing with 50 people for our weekend camping trip with our company. Josh and Ryan were responsive and accommodating in organising the outing, considering the complexities involved with having such a large group. Everyone had a wonderful time in the beautiful surrounds of the Wye and we'd highly recommend the experience to others.

Brilliant company, really helpful, friendly and well organised.
19 people and 5 dogs from Glasbury to Hereford rowing club. The route was beautiful, great campsites enroute stayed at The Pound and Preston Campsite both great
Ryan, Josh and the team really accommodating about 2 separate pick up days allowing those with less time off to finish a day earlier and in allowing us a extra canoe last minute when I got the numbers wrong. Everyone had a amazing time they couldn't have been more helpful!

A great river trip between Hay on Wye and Whitney on Wye for a group of 5 adults, a teenager and a young child. The Wye river is as ever, sublime, Josh and Gordon at Wye Valley canoes were both brilliant and helpful. Highly recommended! In the words of the Terminator.."I'll be back"

Absolutely brilliant morning on the Wye today with Wye Valley Canoes. We are a family of four, we come to this area every year for our summer holiday, and we always use Wye Valley Canoes. Easy to book; staff are all local (including the owner) and incredibly helpful and friendly; just turn up and everything is ready to go (canoes, life jackets, maps, etc). Lots of clear pre-trip advice about safety and the river at this time of year, and pick-up at Hay was quick and easy. Can't recommend highly enough!

Wye Valley Canoes were outstanding from start to finish. Very easy booking online. Superb communication and directions. We arrived to a well kept venue, first class equipment, clean changing rooms. Best of all was the service. We were met by Tom, on the water in the day but a superb cyclist and climber at weekends. These guys have lots of talent. All the chaps were super friendly, excellent with the kids giving them confidence in the briefing. And off we set. A lovely half day to Hay on Wye. I called them as we approached our end point and within 5 minutes a minibus appeared to take us back to our cars. All the boats were carried into and out of the water by the chaps so all we had to do was paddle and enjoy the views, the birds of prey and the otters. We had ages of 13 to 80 and half a day was good enough for the father in law. Go for the full day if you don’t have any olds with you. It’s difficult to tell from websites which company is the best, but I’m so glad we chose Wye Valley Canoes. Especially when our minibus arrived in 5 mins and there were others on the shore waiting ages for their companies to arrive. I think the boys spend more time on looking after their clients and their equipment than on snazzy websites and google optimisation. And I think that’s the right priority. Word of mouth will ensure these guys get the success they deserve.
