Muir Woods has a rich and varied history, from its use by the Coast Miwok people, to its early days of tourism and the Mount Tamalpais Mill Valley Scenic Railway, to an era of conservation, to modern preservation. In each era, the forest has been affected by the actions of humans, for better or for worse. Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, this coastal redwood preserve features majestic redwoods and scenic hiking trails that draw more than 1.5 million visitors each year.

Majestic redwoods in a park unlike any you have ever visited. Take the shuttle because you won't be able to park there. Quiet, serene, awe inspiring and magnificent redwoods soaring all around, untouched for centuries and just across the bridge from San Francisco. Be sure to bring a jacket because it's surprisingly cool in the forrest. If you are stressed... More

Just a short drive north of the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most profound natural areas in the world. Walking in the midst of giant redwoods is an inspiring and awesome event. You can walk a hundred yards or for miles in the hills. Parking is limited so avoid holidays. The very small gift shop and cafe are... More

After the torrential rains, went on a self-directed walking tour with a good friend and his wife. As an urban dweller who loves nature, the walk was peaceful, centering, and meditative. The redwoods are awesome. Glad they had a car and knew how to get around. Otherwise, I might not have made the trip. Nice gift shop and food in... More

We were blessed with gorgeous weather for our visit to this beautiful park. The trees are quite tall and awesome. We had a bus tour guide who explained a lot and was worth the extra money. After he dropped us off at the park, we were on our own and enjoyed walking the various pathways, stopping often to admire these... More

We went early and had the place to ourselves! No one was in our way for photographs. It was wonderfully peaceful and beautiful! As we were leaving, many tourist buses pulled up and the place got really noisy.

Muir Woods is one of the most tranquil places I've ever been. To walk through the majestic giant redwoods, see the beautiful brooks that run through, the carpet of moss covering most everything and the occasional sound of birds. Such a necessary stop while in the city, to decompress from all of the "action" that San Francisco offers!! You wont... More

We were a but puzzled as to how to get here without a tour group/bus. We asked at the Golden Gate Bridge tourism info center and they also had no help for us. An Uber took us up there, but their phone did lose reception on the way. We were able to call and arrange a taxi to pick us... More

Visited Muir Woods just a couple of day after the January rain storms. It’s amazing that this hidden place exits just a short drive from busy San Francisco where it feels like you’ve been transported into a different world. We were visiting on a Thursday mid-morning so we had no trouble parking at the Muir Woods lot. Cost was $10... More
