This simple but lovely small lodge is located 30mn away from Mindo on a 25 ha private nature reserve. It was created by 2 brothers working the land and so passionate about birds that they actually “befriended” some very shy auntpittas (which will respond to their calling if you wait patiently and silently). Besides working the land and tending their... More

This place is most famous for the Cock of the Rock lek and for the antpittas, and rightly so. But, there are many more exceptional birds there than that. And, to top it off, the breakfast they served was probably the best meal we had in Ecuador. And of course, some extraordinary cloud forest scenery. Please keep in mind, though,... More

My husband loves photography, so I was so excited to bring him here (as I have been here before) He loved it! Angel and his crew are wonderful guides and did not disappoint us in seeing some of the cloud rainforest's rarer birds. My husband still talks about this trip and loves the photos we got. Highly recommended to any... More

Paz de las Aves Bird Refuge was my first time bird watching. I went at 6am. I saw several birds from the first blind and received good explanations from Angel. Later, we had breakfast there. The empanadas and plantain dumpling were good. We saw many hummingbirds as we ate breakfast.

Paz de las Aves is a great place to visit, not just to see the famous Cock in the Rock at around 6:00 am and the elusive Ant Pittas that apparently only Angel Paz and his family know how to locate, but lots of other birds. We went with our Guide Elfrain Toapanta (from Sabina Tour in Mindo). We saw... More

We arrived here very early, the only time to see the beautiful Cock of the Rock. We were not at the blind very long before two males arrived at the lek and proceeded to give us a great show with their posturing for supremacy. Next we went to 4 other spots to see 5 different species of the illusive Antpittas.... More

There are some birds that you are never going to find on your own and Antpitta's definitely are mysterious, beautiful birds that fit that category. We saw five different species of Antpitta's as well as many other birds. I would try and spend an entire day, if you are into birding.

I arranged a morning visit with my own guide. the guides from Paz are engaged in making sure visitors are in the right place to see some lovely birds. it's a beautiful valley. you'll be with numerous folks with different guides but everyone was respectful. the Paz guides enticed some antpittas with yummy bits and there were some other guides... Amazing biodiversity of birds. They do great work there reforesting the area to maintain all the beautiful birds, plant, and insect diversity of Ecuador.

My friend Marie arrived UIO with no expectations for her two-week visit. She planned to help me settle into a new apartment in Mindo and also view the earthquake-ravaged area where I lived for 8 years on the Pacific coast - (Jama.) Knowing that our dance cards would be full for that two-week period, I made 'Welcome Back' arrangements for... More
