I have never been to a glacier before and went to the Franz Josef Glacier by a Heli Hike tour. It was a great time and great experience.. yes, by looking at the other people reviews, 2-3 hours is not enough. As glacier is on top of the mountain, if you have the money, use the heli to see a... The free walks to the Glacier and around the car-park are highly recommended, especially if you are travelling on a budget as they are all free! Do visit the iSite the day before to get information on the weather as the glacier floor can change dramatically - no-one wants wet shoes!

Franz Josef is a completely overrated glacier. If you have been to Perito Moreno (or even seen pictures), you know what I'm talking about. The glacier has been retreating for some years now and it just looks a bit small and no breathtaking at all. I enjoyed more the rainforest trek that leads to it than the glacier itself. The... More

This was a nice comfortable walk, although it rained all the way. The views were worth it. Met some friendly people along the way. I would say it was a moderate walk.

We went on the walk independently and just enjoyed being outside and in the area. Like so much of New Zealand, there are always things to see and do that are different from home. The walk up is fairly gradual and once we got to "the end" the sky was overcast. I imagine flying over the glacier would give a... More

Went the walk to the glacier, saw plenty of waterfalls and had a good experience. I had seen glaciers before, but seeing them next to rainforest was a new experience.

Such dramatic if not intimidating views as you walk through a track, to then be faced with the descending glacier at Franz Josef We decided to walk to view as all flights up to the glacier were cancelled due to poor visibility Amazing place and well worth the 1 hour trek The following day we rebooked and took a helicopter... We had a glacier walk which took several hours. I would not recommend to go with Glacier Guide company. It is a walk that is too expensive for the amount of time and experience with glacier

An easy-ish walk from the car park before it gets quite steep closer to the glacier but take a break and then keep going because it's amazing to see the glacier! Totally worth it!

We flew over the glaciers in a plane, a journey of 60 minutes, which literally flew by so quickly. The pilot from Air Safari was excellent giving as an informative commentary. Mount Cook and the crevices in the glaciers around it explain why mountain climbing is treacherous.
