Great walk to viewing area

Lovely walk about 90 minutes return. Good view of glacier and interesting rocks and river on the way there. Can be busy due to tour buses so suggest going after 6pm.

A helicopter ride from Franz Josef is one of the most exciting trips you could take. We went up the Fox glacier and landed up in the snow. The views over the mountains were spectacular.

A rainy day meant this wasn't the best experience and a rock fall 2 days before meant the path was closed although we didn't see any signs about this at the start of the path. However it was still a good walk and nothing can be done about the weather or random rockfalls. Credit to the cheery warden who was... More

After a day of rain and on our 4th attempt we managed to get a helicopter flight, wow, magical. Views magnificent, stepping out on the snow, incredible

The impact of global warming shows itself at the Glacier. I have visited this over there years and seen the decline in the Glacier. The trek in is very easy but please remember to share the path as pedestrian traffic comes back from the viewing point the same way. There are some lovely photo opportunities along the way with the... More

We took a guided hike to view the Glacier. I so much preferred that to actually walking on a glacier. The hike followed the river and cliffs and was challenging. It afforded a spectacular view of the glacier at the end. Allow a couple of hours for the hike.

Why wouldnt you look at the glacier while you are here. The large body of frozen water carving the landscape is amazing.

Not really worth the hike in. Couldn't get that close to the face for safety reasons etc. Fox Glacier was definitely better on this day.

If you are near Franz Josef then you have to visit the glacier, it is after all what the area is particularly known for. The walk is about 90 minutes return from the car park over well groomed paths with no steep inclines. The glacier itself is still some distance away from you when you get to the viewing platform,... Loved this part of our trip. Great walk with lots of waterfalls along the way. Spectacular scenery. You can get close enough for a good view.
