The setting is beautiful on the hilltop and there are views of the mountains and downtown. The stone is pretty rose pink and the story of this military unit during the Mexican war is particularly interesting and the ties to the gold rush in California. The tour guide told us the story. We didn't see any information to read when you get there beside one little plaque which is very unfortunate to anyone who doesn't have a tour guide so you'll have to look it up on the internet yourself.…

We enjoyed this stop on our tour. It was such an interesting story the Mormon Battalion had and the connection to the California gold rush.

The monument represents a group of men who traveled California to fight in a war. There are depictions of various events that occurred as the men traveled. The monument is impressive and detailed. It is located outside the capitol building.
