The intro video was very good. The field is manageable with a car. What is left of the crater is surprisingly small, in my opinion. It was a rare thrill to see this place. I... read more

The intro video was very good. The field is manageable with a car. What is left of the crater is surprisingly small, in my opinion. It was a rare thrill to see this place. I recommend watching the intro to the film Cold Harbor to get a sense of the violence that occurred in this place.

This park covers a lot of real estate in four separate locations. We didn't do too much exploring on foot (our knees don't hike much any more) but there are plenty of trails for those who do. Spent more than a half day at the various visitor centers; all great, the one at Five Forks our favorite for the fine... More

My sons love history so I thought we would make a quick hour stop on our way home from Richmond to Charlotte. 3 hours later we left feeling satisfied but could have spent more time taking it all in. It really is up to you for how long it will take. The short movie was a great introduction. We were... More

I went on a hike today of this beautiful park and enjoyed every step. I started at the Welcome Center and was greeted by a very friendly and helpful staff. I was invite to see a 18 min video which was eye opening. I then went on a 4 mile group hike and learned more history about the battle that... More

The Petersburg National Battlefield is an expansive park covering not only the Petersburg area but includes City Point in Hopewell through the final battles at Five Forks.

Seriously people. The National Park Service is worth every cent that goes towards it. The people are knowledgeable and the information is always well presented. Petersburg is a testiment to this. There is a driving tour of key sites and some great walks. Give it a couple of hours - car required.

We had a day and a half to relax and tour, the National Battlefield Park was excellent. Absolute musts are stopping at the visitor information centers first. Rangers are worth their weight in gold. Each stop was well cared for, with appropriate signage. Perhaps it was the time of year, but we never ran into crowds. Great experience.

A nice place to visit for some Civil war history. Watch the film, take a walk, and do the driving tour. Learned alot here.

We stopped at the visitor center and watched a short video before driving the road to numbered sites. The terrain is covered now with grass, but the bumps and angles allow one to imagine how it was. Also the reconstructed version of the trench redoubt was fascinating.

I heard about running this. Most of it was on the road but it was a good 3.2 mile run to the gate so a good 10K out and back. Their are some long hills. Not steep but slow inclines and spread out enough to hurt you when you're getting tired. It was nice to have the shading of the... More
