This old active Catholic church has interesting religious scenes painted on the walls and ceilings. It is a quiet place. When we went there, there was a big dog asleep in the aisle. It is a pretty and winding drive to get there. There are restrooms available if you need them.

in researching the big island, we came across this church, we had to put it as a must see on our list. We were not disappointed, we enjoyed the peacefulness of the gardens, the history was amazing, and the artwork was awesome. We thoroughly enjoyed the curators story, it would have been nice to have at least 5 minutes for... More

Leave highway 11 from or to your drive to Kona, because this Painted Church with its cemetery, the star fruits and tangerine trees is really lovely. The paintings on the inside of the church are beautiful.

We made a wrong turn and ended up winding our way down the mountain and then back up. On the way we discovered the Painted church which is really lovely. You can be fooled because the outside of the church is white, only the inside is beautifully painted with murals. When we left we discovered it was very quick to... More

Interesting church on a small lot adjacent to a cemetery. I'd like to go to a service there sometime.

While this site might not appeal to everyone (I was included in that group) we are certainly glad we stopped. Visually it is the most beautifully landscaped church that I have seen, song birds proliferated in the early evening, star fruit trees, banana and other trees are part of the landscape. The paintings on the inside of the church were... More

The St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church in Honaunau, Hawaii is reportedly the first painted church built by a Belgian priest. Since he wanted to communicate the stories of Jesus, he used painted images. From this church he went on to build more painted churches in Hawaii and there is The Painted Church Foundation.

Church and the grounds and cemetery are beautiful. We got lucky and the custodian gave us a 20 minute talk on the history of the church which is fascinating. Bring some cash to drop in the box to help with preservation of this gem

Founded in the 1800's this beautiful Catholic Church is small but full of character. Hand painted throughout is just lovely. I am very glad we stopped here. It is an active church that welcomes visitiors. The location is up the road from the Pu'uhonua National park(also a must see). The ground even have a pet dog and 2 cats so... More
