About
The Buckhorn Saloon is where it all began-where history was made and legend lives. It is where Teddy Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders and Pancho Villa is rumored to have planned the Mexican Revolution. Many of the original furnishings still grace today's Buckhorn Saloon, including the back-bar which was hand-crafted of marble and cherry wood. The bar features locally brewed beers on draft. You might also like one of our delicious and icy Prickly Pear Margaritas; it's a Texas favorite!

Strange that the title is Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger... It is advertised as the Buckhorn Saloon, Museum and Texas Ranger Museum. All of the ads I saw showed an admission price of $20, but apparently they need to correct this. The price had increased when we were there. The museum consisted of old mounted fish and game. For the most part, these were old mounts as evidenced by the broken fins of most, if not all, of the fish. The game mounts were ok. The Texas Ranger Museum was only one room and it was truly nice, as was the old street, but these were a small part of the the price you paid to see. We did not want to eat there when we saw the restaurant area.

We started our visit by eating at the cafe. Was slightly disappointed that they were out of brisket by 1pm. Food was good and price reasonable considering it’s a tourist spot and tax is 8%. You order at counter and the bring to you. The museum: Its actually two museums in one. The price is over $20 per adult ticket. a bit steep in my opinion The Texas Ranger museum is downstairs and the BuckHorn museum up stairs. Texas Ranger museum has lots of history about Texas Rangers. Lots of info, guns, relics. The Buckhorn museum has HUNDREDS of stuffed animals. If stuffed dead animals bother or offend you, keeping moving as this place is not for you. It was unique and neat. I’d rate it as good. Somewhere between average and very good.

The Buckhorn Saloon is a must see if visiting San Antonio and you can't order anything but the buffalo burger. An impressive display of animal mounts, we did not pay to see the museum, but just ate lunch in the restaurant area. A burger, (or alligator bites from the appetizer menu) with a draft of Lone Star beer is a great way to start your tour of San Antonio.

When you walk in you are greeted and asked whether you're interested in the museum or lunch.
The special that day was Beef Brisket and it was delicious. Served on a hoagie bun with BBQ sauce, onions and sliced pickles. Meat was very tender and fries were hot. Ordered drinks from the bar...a little pricey. Animal heads on every wall. FYI...don't sit under the chandelier. Birds come in from the outside and perch on it.

Stopped here about 11:30 for lunch and had place to ourselves. Plain Jane chicken was a hit with family with plenty of choices for sides to include salads and fruit cups. Grilled blackened catfish has a little kick but was excellent. Daughter enjoyed the root beer float as well. Food takes a little bit of a wait but it’s worth it. There is a museum for $22 which we didn’t go into but you can get a flavor of this old saloon just grabbing lunch. Definitely a great spot very close to Alamo.

Well, I was the one of the three of us that wanted to go here. We didn't even finish a beer. First of all, I ordered a bottle of Miller Light, got a tall aluminum can. So when the bartender finally go near enough to hear me (he didn't come back to check on us at all) I asked for a chilled glass. He didn't seem to want to be there, let alone work. There was an old guy in a sorry cowboy outfit manning the ticket sales to the Texas Ranger Museum, but after looking around the bar, I decided not to spend money on the museum part. Our stay there was about 20 minutes - we had better things to do.

If you like Western history, you will love the Texas Ranger Museum! It has many different exhibits other then the Texas Ranger history. Approximately 30-45 minutes can be spent her exploring the museum and a meal can be eaten at the Buck-horn Saloon before or after the museum visit. (Our tickets were purchases with the San Antonio City Sightseeing Super Pass, and highly recommended!)

We loved this one. Although expensive to see everything, we had a good meal, saw some really interesting stuff in the bar area and museums. First you notice the mounted animal heads in the bar area. Then you go to the museum you see even more, including full body mounted animals. Oddities, circus acts, lots of unusual stuff. Then the Texas Ranger museum, where lots of items from various Rangers given after they retired. Loved this. And it's folksy. A fun stop on our tour of the city.

Lots of additions since I visited 25 years ago! Staff was awesome and friendly. Museum was cool. Some of the animals need to be replaced. You could tell they have been around a while. Gift shop was good. We debated stopping because of price however it was worth stopping in.

What a dreadful place. Complete racism to non Americans. ( we are a white British couple )
Bar tender very unfriendly then proceeded to charge us $20 for a small beer and small margarita, when he then charged the Americans next to us $ 20 for 4 bottled beers.
We’d just come from Tako Petes where large Margaritas were $3 each. Avoid this place , it’s a joke

Can we just stop in for lunch? Or is lunch only available to those who purchase museum admission? Thanks!

My grandfather had a display in this museum and I was wondering if it was still there. His name was William Grover Muter(WG Muter Taxidermy) I remember seeing it as a child but I don't remember what it was. I would love to see it again. Thanks, Linda Spillman Pres

There are a tremendous number of mounts in both the marine and mammal museums and I imagine most people (other than maybe locals) pay very little attention to the taxidermist name and simply focus their attention on the mount itself. It has been some time now since I visited the Buckhorn, but, I do remember some of the more outstanding and unusual mounts and photographed a few. Unless you can be more specific in your description, I doubt any visitor will be able to assist you. However, I would think the curator of the museums would have records of from who and what they received and placed on display. May I suggest you contact the Buckhorn Saloon and speak with the curator, giving as much detail as possible, such as your grandfather's name, his company's name, his address at the time. You say you visited the museum when you were a kid, so, make a close a guess as to your age when you visited, thereby determining the calendar year of your visit. Then create a bracket of time, say five years prior and five years post visit and provide this time frame to the curator as well. Remember, he/she is not required to provide this information, so, be very polite and offer to do your best to provide any additional information he/she may indicate that would help him/her locate the information you desire. SECOND. I have no idea as to your age, so, I will consider that you have older relatives, friends and or business associates of your grandfather that you know and or can discover. Search them out and ask them, check old newspaper archives for articles and advertisements for reference to the exhibit. It would be highly unusual for someone to have their work exhibited in the Buckhorn Saloon Museum and not brag about it to his friends, business associates, customers, as well as, use it in advertising his business. I sure hope this helps you. I would love it if you could see fit to let me know the results of your search. If I can assist further, please let me know.
