This attraction has stood the test of time and is still worth visiting
I last visited many years ago, maybe over 20, so definitely things have changed somewhat. When I was here before there seemed to be move native vendors, such that the area was full. This time, of course it was mid week off season, but there were only a handful, maybe less than 50% occupied. I understand there is now a lottery for the vendors to determine who gets to set up so maybe it was just a slow week in general. Regardless, the jewelry is beautiful and authentic.

    Historic building worth seeing
This building was originally built in 1610 though it was largely destroyed in 1680 and has been rebuilt and reconfigured a number of times since then. You can visit the inside of the building as part of your admission to the adjacent New Mexico History Museum. The long covered front porch of the building has dozens of Native American vendors along its full length, and they sell an array of jewelry, clothing and food items, and other things. It's worth checking out what's for sale there even if you're not looking to buy anything. The Palace interior is interesting, and there are good exhibits showing the changes to the building over the centuries. The Palace plus the New Mexico History Museum will be a worthwhile visit for anyone who's interested in the area's long history.

An Opportunity to Participate in a Great Tradition!
A “must do” if you ever visit Santa Fe, NM, is the Native American Vendors Program of the Palace of the Governors. Daily, year round, the jewelry and craft makers from the pueblos surrounding Santa Fe set up displays to sell their wares outside the Palace, facing the Plaza. While the local artists who have achieved some renown have their items displayed in the shops around Santa Fe, the local Native American families, often with the help of mom, dad, and kids, spread out blankets in their assigned stalls. It’s really something to see! Especially as the vendors move their wares on the blankets using long sticks with hooks on the end! :-) And, there is something for everyone… jewelry, turquoise, silver, beadwork, small crafts. It’s just fun to browse and talk to the vendors. They truly are wonderful people, and we enjoy supporting them! And, much of the jewelry is beautiful, some better than what you’ll find in the shops. Lots of jewelry for men too, so don’t be shy about shopping! LOL But beware, they are tough negotiators! Great value to be had, at a fair price! Recommend you visit with the Native American Vendors whenever you can, it’s a blessing to interact with and support them!

No trip to Santa Fe is complete without a day on the plaza and no day on the plaza is complete without going to the Palace of the Governors. I highly recommend going to the Museum of New Mexico History which allows you access to the Palace. It is very well restored and gives great insight into colonial New Mexico under the Spanish.
The wall of vendors is also very interesting--all Native American artists selling their wares of beautiful hand made jewelry at very reasonable prices and many will talk to you about what inspired this or that piece. So cool!

We went to the Palace of the Governors twice to visit the natives who were selling their jewelry and crafts. It is wonderful but the prices are not any better than the stores. The natives make their living from selling their home crafted jewelry and that is important to know.

I lovef chatting with the Artists about their work. I found some jewelry and Christmas ornaments. None of it was cheap, but all of it was well crafted. I liked the artistry and uniqueness of the work here far more thsn anything I'd seen in the nearby shops.

If you are looking for beautiful jewelry and pottery done by local artist this is the place to go. In this market style pavilion you will also get to meet and talk with the artist. It was a great opportunity to find out their process for creating the artwork as well as the meaning behind the symbolisms in their work. Everyone was so friendly and talkative. All vendors are licensed by the city to sell their artwork so I felt I was buying authentic traditional Indian artwork.

We did not visit the interior of the building but enjoyed the Native American artist vendors outside. Their work was beautiful and every one of them were friendly and willing to talk about their craft. I bought a few gifts and a treat or two for myself. I would have given 5 stars but there weren't as many of them as I saw on a previous visit and they did begin to pack up early on this weekday.

There is a museum inside the Palace of Governors explaining its long, long history. With your admission you also go inside the History Museum of New Mexico. There is so much interesting information to take in. Everyone talks about Santa Fe’s galleries and art, while still exceptional, I never hear about the very old history even prehistoric of the city and state. Older than Jamestown and St. Augustine. Some of the oldest in the US. Loved learning so much here….I highly recommend.

While the interior of the Palace remains closed, the real draw is the Native American market that continues in front of the building. Be aware that most of them are still wearing masks because Covid has devastated some of the tribes. Handmade jewelry, pottery and some other items can be found. I saw some excellent copper and silver work. Just be aware of the crowds.

The Palace of the Governors is the oldest continuously occupied public building in the US. It's right on Santa Fe Plaza, and we appreciated the chance to see such an historic building. When we visited in October, everything was closed and quiet due to Covid, but we still were happy that we'd gotten a chance to see the exterior of the building.

This is a very historic building from early 17th century Spanish settlement of Santa Fe and an important building to have preserved. There is a museum inside and the portico on front facing the plaza gives a good feel for the city's past. It is also a location to buy jewellery, ceramics, and other Native American from the licensed craftsmen and women themselves, who sell them in the portico.

Great History stop for Santa Fe but feel like the touristy open air market was just sad. I was a little disappointed that I did not see "the people" having made or making the jewelry themselves. Anyone can order what was being sold and the jewelry looked alike from one person to the next, not individual artistry. Room for improvement here, in my opinion. Do see the history and the beautiful park adjacent to but skip the wares.
