A gentleman was there to tell us the history and answer any questions. We walked here - just a short distance from Perrotti Park where our cruise ship tender dropped us off.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023

It is a wonderful old church located in the heart of downtown. It was great that it was open and I could go inside. Founded in 1698, it is the oldest Episcopal parish in the state. In the mid 18th century, the church was home to the largest Anglican congregation in New England. The current Georgian building was designed by architect Richard Munday and constructed in 1725–26. It one of the largest extant 18th century New England churches and has been designated a National Historic Landmark since 1968.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 November 2023
- Mixa's TravelsOldsmar, Florida4,154 contributionsBeautiful Historical Church in NewportWe took the Colonial Newport Walking Tour as a shore excursion on our Silver Shadow Cruise. Ken, our guide, gave us a lot of information on Newport and Rhode Island’s early history. A major stop is Trinity Church. Here we learn about the church’s early roots, designed like the Old North Church in Boston. Inside we see how each family had their own block. We saw this in the old North Church. Each family decorated their section. The church was very plain in the past without Stain Glass windows. Today stained glass windows are used as fundraiser for the church. A lot of history in the church.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 September 2024

Wonderful old church located in downtown Newport. Dave was the docent on duty when I visited, and gave an excellent tour of the church. Highly recommend if you are interested in Newport history, esp. if you are Episcopalian or Anglican.

This church is easy to locate as its close to the harbor on Queen Anne Square. Trinity Church, built in 1725, is totally made of wood. And if you know Boston, it looks similar to “Old North Church.”
Trinity is not overly large. It has held, though, plenty of famous people. Oral tradition has it that George Washington attended mass in this Episcopalian enclave.
Members of the famous Vanderbilt family attended here while vacationing in Newport. The famous Commodore’s Hazard and Mathew Perry attended Trinity. And, finally, the famous artist, Gilbert Stuart—who painted George Washington—went here to name a few parishioners.
What was real fascinating was seeing the three-tiered wineglass pulpit. It is close to the alter, surrounded by box pews.
Outside is a number of “old” graves—one of whom was a 1780 grave of famous French General, Chevalier de Ternay. The French did help the USA in the American Revolution. By the way, the British did use Trinity Church as a garrison for two years starting in 1776.

While visiting Newport, you must stop by Trinity Church. Trinity Church was built in 1726. It contains a rare "three-tiered pulpit (wineglass or chalice-shaped), Tiffany stained glass, original chandeliers and an organ played by Handel. This is a gorgeous historic building worthy of many photos. The stained glass is outstanding. Be sure to sit in pew box #81 where George Washington would sit during his visits to Trinity Church. Also, Queen Elizabeth sat there. Be sure to look for the "wardens' rods" or "nodding rods" which were used to tap those who fell asleep during colonial services! Visit the church yard and see the interesting grave stones. Trinity Church is a must see during your visit to Newport.

I recently attended a choral service at this church and was so amazed that I may just have been converted!
The Requiem was flawless. The choir sand like angels. And the Reverand seated me in what could very well be the most famous pew in the entire church.
The interior is picture perfect. The craftsmanship has stood the test of time. It is not only one of the most interesting churches I've ever been in, but certainly one of the warmest and most welcoming.
If you're ever in Newport, you would be wise to visit this historical church. It's so beautiful, inside and out. And the parishioners are some of the most kind and wonderful Newporters one can come across.
I look forward to my next visit as I'm sure I'll not be disappointed in either the sermon, or the gorgeous choral music coming from above.

Trinity Church is an outstanding historic building designed by Christopher Wren. It has one of the few remaining "three tiered wine glass pulpits" in the country. Graves have interesting inscriptions and names of some you would recognize. An absolute must when in Newport. Picturesque at anytime but my favorite is winter when its snowing and the church is lit with candles. Beautiful!

Trinity Church was built in the 1720s. It is a beautiful old church is a lovely setting a short distance from downtown Newport on Queen Anne Square The church has been visited by George Washington and Queen Elizabeth II. The church can be toured weekdays from about 10 AM to 1 PM (check the schedule to see when it is open). Of interest are the pulpit, the organ, the tablets around the inside of the church and the Tiffany window donated by the Vanderbilt family.

Trinity Church was not opened when we stopped by, but the structure is stunning and surroundings are spiritual. I found church and the parking by reading one of reviews on trip advisor and I'm glad we stopped here!

We stopped in to see the interior of this very old Episcopal Church, and we were delighted to have an excellent tour guide. (There is a small fee.) He was able to tell us about the Tiffany stain glass windows, the social strata of Newport as evidenced by who owned which boxes, and the history of the church and cemetery. In the back of the church, there is the old headstone of a French admiral who died in Newport after helping the Americans gain control of Newport from the British. He was buried in the Trinity graveyard, as there was no Catholic cemetery. His remains are still in the cemetery.
