My daughter and I wandered around Newport trying to get into some old houses, the Quaker meeting house, etc. All were locked and had signs directing us to the Newport Historical Society. So we went there (old building on Touro St) and were told that the only way to get access to those places was on tours run out of... More

Located right there on the Wharf, this museum has a lot but is not comprehensive. A good place to start.

I stopped by here after visiting Touro Synagogue and Trinity Church, in quest of deeper knowledge of Newport's history. Although not expansive, gave great color on pre-pilgrim, native American culture and life. It is a small collection and will probably take longer to get through all the material in the gift shop.

We stumbled on this wonderful resource, operated by the Newport Historical Society, quite by accident. The building itself dates to 1762. Downstairs is a terrific gift shop staffed by friendly personnel while upstairs is an amazing museum. Donations are voluntary but $4 a person is suggested for adults, $2 for children over five. Very reasonable for what you get, which... More

Didn't visit the museum upstairs but took ages wandering the fascinating shop on the ground floor. Interesting gifts which of course I purchased but received a flavour of the town just by wondering around the shop. Great place but Newport itself was a joy. Recommended:-)

When taking a break from shopping, walking, recommend this break and still getting a history lesson. Lots of easy to carry items back home in shop, and sure you'll learn something new.

We stopped to learn a little about the Newport area. This museum has a nice shop down stairs and a history area up stairs. I learned about the early residents and about the contribution of the French .

Traditional text, photo and artifact museum. Interesting history of Newport, but could use an exhibit update with new technology, i.e. a video showing the changes of the city over the years. There is a small ipod displayed in the museum shop with interesting exhibit info. The shop does not have as many unique and historical items as you might find... More

For a suggested donation you can visit this small museum for a budget price. It tells about the early history of Newport, starting with the Native Americans. The gift shop is also very nice with a variety of items including candles, jewelry, nautical things and replicas of historical Newport things.

The Museum of Newport History is a beautiful brick structure on Thames Ave.with a museum shop on the 1st floor and the actual museum on the 2nd floor. We did not have time to take in the actual museum this trip, but did spend a few minutes in the shop and enjoyed the quality offerings available. They had a good selection of...
