About
Marble House was built between 1888 and 1892 for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt. It was a summer house, or "cottage," as Newporters called them, but also a social and architectural landmark that set the pace for Newport's transformation from a quiet summer colony to a legendary resort of the Gilded Age. Mr. Vanderbilt was the grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, who established the family's fortune in steamships and the New York Central Railroad. His wife, Alva, was a leading hostess in Newport society during the Gilded Age, and envisioned Marble House as her "temple to the arts" in America. The house was designed by Richard Morris Hunt, one of the premier architects of the Gilded Age, who found inspiration in the Petit Trianon at Versailles. The cost was reported in contemporary press accounts to be $11 million, of which $7 million was spent on 500,000 cubic feet of marble. Several scenes from HBO's hit series "The Gilded Age" were filmed in Marble House.

Most Beautiful of the Newport Mansions available to tour
Marble House is not the largest of the Guilded Age Mansions in Newport but we found it to be the most beautiful inside. The decor was certainly over the top bit it went with the house. Tours are available through the Preservation Society of Newport County. One of the nice things about this place is the beautiful furniture. Virtually all of the original furniture was donated to the Preservation Society by the Prince family (the final private owners). The Chinese tea house is also worth a visit. It is located at the rear of the property (beside the ocean) and serves tea and snacks. We were a bit disappointed that the snacks were just prepackages sandwiches, muffins, etc. However, we read that they serve better things at other times.

    Aesthetic uplift....
It's been 2-3 decades since our last visit; but it only took a few moments of the breathtaking beauty within, to rekindle memories of the impact of our first experience here. There is room after room of the highest level of artesian achievement in creativity, detail and craftmanship. Some may find disagreement about the accumulation and/or ostentatious presentation of wealth; but there can be no doubt about the result of letting skilled artists/workers have the resources to produce their highest aspirations. The competition to produce the finest "cottage", has now allowed generations the availability of an amazing aesthetic uplift. One change from our last time here, was the availability of taking a self-guided tour at one's own pace; and being able to immerse oneself in each area, as long as desired. Having mobility issues, it was appreciated not having to keep up with a guided group; and being able to rest as needed. It was also very helpful having staff throughout, offering additional information and/or assistance. We explored several mansions during our two days in Newport; all of which were magnificent. But as we had remembered; the Breakers and here were two of the most iconic, for us, in representing the era/genre.

    Still Beautiful!
I have been here several times and was glad I went back. It was just as beautiful as I remembered it. Loved it there. As with the Breakers, this was also a "self-guided" tour where you download the app and listen to the stories as you enter room to room. Really good information. Afterwards, walked the grounds and saw the Chinese Tea House. Would go back again.

    Beautiful
I've only visited the Breakers and the Marble House from all the Newport mansions and I loved the Breakers. The Marble House is also very pretty but in a much smaller and less grand scale. Its gardens are magnificent and the view spectacular.

    Worth a visit
This was the second of three mansions we visited (The Breakers being the first), and we really enjoyed the gorgeous house and the story of the owner. The house is definitely worth a visit. Last entry was at 5pm but you could spend another hour walking around the mansion.

    Over the top Gilded Age
I’m a preservationist by trade and all of the Newport Mansion tours are very well executed. The only reason this tour gets and 4 and not a 5 is mostly because I’m not a fan of Alva Vanderbilt and do not enjoy her story or what she had Richard Morris Hunt create. Personal preference but still interesting property to visit.

Very classic marble mansion in Newport
The exterior with its grand marble columns leads into an elaborately decorated mansion. Marble house was furnished with turn of the century luxurious furnishings, canvases, and shiny marble floors. There is an Asian tea house out back, but it was a very rainy day in Newport so I skipped it. Also I had ferried over from providence so I didn’t know how long I’d need to explore each mansion. I toured the mansion in august.

We visited Marble House because it's one of the few Newport mansions that are open in Covid times.
The house is incredibly majestic, able to transport visitors to the times when the Vanderbilt family inhabited the house, with all its luxuries and incredible art.
Some of the rooms are closed due to Covid since the natural flow doesn't allow for social distancing but you still get to appreciate the beauty of Marble House despite the limitations.
The Chinese Tea House in the backyard overlooks the cliff and it provides such a feeling of serenity when visiting. It's a beautiful backdrop to an already beautiful mansion.
Parking is easy and free, right across the street from the mansion.
Definitely recommended.

Beautiful Newport cottage and highly recommended. First floor is ADA accessible though wheelchairs need to traverse a long and uneven cobblestone entrance. Kitchens and basement are highlights of the house, and information about family adjacent to gift shop is worth reading and provides exceptional context to the house. Docents were helpful during our tour.

The Marble House is gorgeous. Admission includes access to the property and an audio tour, which weaves in Vanderbilt history well. In addition to the interior, there is a cool Japanese Tea Garden outside. I visited in December, and the Marble House was decked out for Christmas. Out of the the three Newport mansions that decorate for Christmas (the Breakers, the Elms, and the Marble House), this was my favorite one.

Back in 1892 the Marble House had around $11 million price tag. The marble marvel was built in the Beaux Arts style, but the interior and exterior were influenced by French and Greek art and architecture. The opulent "cottage" was William Vanderbilt's gift to his wife Alva on her 39th birthday, no less. In our opinion Marble House is one of the top 3 Newport Rhode Island mansions to see, after The Breakers and The Elms. Thanks to the audio-guided tour, we walked around at our own pace, while learning a lot about the beautiful mansion.
Treat yourself to a visit to a fabulous work of art.

What an experience to see these very old and unique Mansions that once housed some of the wealthiest Americans during their time. It was about an hour guided tour that allowed you to see the different architectures and beautiful artwork of the times. Be aware of the hours of operation as google says they are open however during winter months, they are only opened on Saturdays and Sundays. Call before if you want to do a self-guided tour vs guide tour. Overall, great way to experience old time Newport Rhode Island.

An amazing mansion, with obviously, marble everywhere, only interrupted by great stained glass windows, gilded and intricately carved ceilings and doors. It rivals The Breakers, in its beauty and opulence. Download the audio tour onto your phone, from the newportmansions.org website, before you go.
Walk through the grounds in the back, to visit the Chinese Teahouse. It would be great, if this is used as a real Teahouse, where public could go and enjoy some tea, after a day of visiting the mansions and walking the Cliff Walk.

Relive the Gilded Age in one of the most stunning homes Newport has to offer! Situated right on the ocean in Newport, Marble House is open and airy, full of light and wonder. Learn the history of one of the most industrious and powerful families in America and how this family gave birth to women who took the reigns during the suffragist movement; a family that wouldn't allow their own daughter to decorate her bedroom the way she wanted. There is a wonderful museum and gift shop on the bottom floor that can't be missed. Fans are placed throughout the house to keep visitors comfortable and the museum staff knows more about American history than most civics teachers. Ask them anything! They probably have the answer. The grounds are beautiful and you can enjoy a cup of tea and a pastry in the Chinese Tea House by the ocean. Stunning. A visit that can't be missed.

The mansion of course is beautiful but many smaller rooms are currently closed off. This may be due to COVID but not sure. Overall you can get through this mansion in about 35-45 minutes if you wanted to. The gift shop is nice.

Ohhh to be 39 years old and to receive this "Cottage" as a birthday present. Well that is exactly how this house came to be in the Vanderbilt's.

This Mansion was a self guided tour ~ you can down load the app and listen to a audio tour OR right next to the dining room (1st room) there was a stack of pamphlets in multiple different languages that are word for word what the audio says.

The house will bring you through Dining Room, Library, Gothic Room Ballroom (1st Floor) to the 2 girls room extravagate, a dressing room (converted) Mr. Vanderbilt's room and the 2 bedrooms in the back for the boys _very small (2nd floor) Lastly, the tour will lead you down MANY STEPS down to the basement and you will see the kitchen before you will be lead to the gift shop. Upon leaving you can walk the grounds to the Tea House in the backward.
