Overview

More
Chateau-sur-Mer is a landmark of High Victorian architecture, furniture, wallpapers, ceramics and stenciling. It was the most palatial residence in Newport from its completion in 1852 until the appearance of the Vanderbilt houses in the 1890s.Chateau-sur-MerChateau-sur-Mer ballroom was built as an Italianate-style villa for China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore. Mr. Wetmore died in 1862, leaving the bulk of his fortune to his son, George Peabody Wetmore, and a generous allowance for his daughter, Annie Derby Wetmore. George married Edith Keteltas in 1869. During the 1870s, the young couple departed on an extended trip to Europe, leaving architect Richard Morris Hunt to remodel and redecorate the house in the Second Empire French style. As a result, Chateau-sur-Mer displays most of the major design trends of the last half of the 19th century.

We really enjoyed our tour of Chateau-sur-Mer. We arrived on a rainy Monday in Newport and decided to take this tour. The mansion is modest in comparison to The Breakers, etc.; however the home is quiet charming and filled with the great history of one...More

We walked through the rain to Chateau Sur Mer. Luckily we caught the last guided tour of the day. Penny was very informative and the tour was great. The house was fascinating - incredible to think how much money went into the house.

Not as elaborate as some other hames in area but an excellent and interesting home worth taking the time to tour.

Every mansion is Newport is worth seeing. This one is lovely. The audio tour is excellent. You can choose to do a quick tour or listen to more stories about the history and life in this historic home.

My sisters and I were told that this mansion had no furniture in it so we were saving it for later. If we ran out of time, we thought no biggie. I'm glad we were able to see it though. Even though there wasn't a...More

I liked the darker, Gothic style of this mansion, and Judy, our guide was very knowledgeable and added much to the tour. She was very stylish and classy, almost as if she were a member of the family, and it was a nice change from...More

Smaller than other houses. Disappointed that the kitchens and servant areas not visible whatsoever. The biggest plus was the excellent live tour guide who grew up around the corner and remembered the family who lived here. Great stories from her.

While this was not one of my favorites among the mansions, the tour guide was very informative. We enjoyed the audio tours at the other mansions. The tour guide did provide a wealth of information. I would recommend this tour

One of the larger mansions in Newport on the tour. Definitely worth the time. The decor in this mansion was beautiful.

This is an older house that shows the wealthy lifestyle before the excess of the Vanderbilt’s. It’s still a large house and a good contrast to the even larger cottages. The wood carving in the office is beautiful and makes the room a bit dark....More
