Difficult to find but worth the hunt
Castle Hill Lighthouse was very difficult to find. In fact, it took 2 trips. It turns out that there is a trail to it, but one has to know where to look and walk right up to the trail entrance to find it. That said, once one gets to the right place the trail is marked with a nice sign. And it was worth the hunt. Castle Hill Lighthouse is located on Narragansett Bay in Newport. The lighthouse was completed in 1890 on property formerly belonging to the naturalist, oceanographer, and zoologist Alexander Agassiz of Harvard University. Agassiz sold the land to the United States Government for the lighthouse for $1. His mansion on the property, commissioned in 1874, is now an inn (Castle Hill Inn). It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 as Castle Hill Lighthouse.

No access in lighthouse but great views
We accessed this lighthouse by going into the castle hill inn property, There was a guard gate but there was nobody in it when we went, but I see from other reviews that they seem cool if you say you are going to see the lighthouse. Then you go past the beach cottages on the left, there was a roped off parking area. I included a picture. The paths to get to the lighthouse are through the woods across the street from the parking area The lighthouse itself is cool and there is a stairs to get down to it. The views from the cliffs are incredible. If you have some time to kill, do this and then drive down ocean avenue.

Beautiful Lighthouse Nestled in the Rocks
Our GPS took us to the hotel to walk to the lighthouse. The actual parking for the lighthouse is not marked as such, but is a grassy area on the right as you go on the drive toward the hotel. Cross over the road and look for a dirt path through the trees. The lighthouse is beautiful.. an uphill walk to get there, then down. No access to inside. Really interesting, though. Worth the trouble.

This is marked on maps but not accessible unless allowed by Castle Hill Inn. It's a walk on rough path but worth it. Very nice staff at Inn allowed us to park and it was a gorgeous view and nicely kept.

Stayed in one of the beach houses while visiting Newport and was impressed with the Castle Hill area. Plan to arrive for a drink or tea at Castle Hill Inn and then walk to the lighthouse! Beautiful view across the bay and especially striking at sunset. A short walk along the path with parking at that Inn either in parking lot or beside the greenhouse. A great place to visit even if not staying at the Inn.

This lighthouse im was one of my favorites on my New England trip recently. The actual address of the lighthouse won't show up on most GPS systems.

To reach the lighthouse, park in the Castle Inn parking lot all the way to the left when you enter the parking lot. The Inn is open to non-guests of the hotel for drinks, so the valet and staff there are very helpful.

Once you have parked in the back of the lot nearest the wooded area, you will see a small trail opening on the tree line of the woods. Water will be on your right.

Walk the trail until it opens up. Lighthouse will be on the right. Follow the path and you won't miss it. I recommend walking out on the cliffs to get the best pictures. It's very safe, even with inappropriate walking shoes. I had on flip flops and I had no problem at all.

If you're contemplating visiting this light but unsure if you should detour all the way to Newport to do it, I will tell you that it was absolutely worth adding on an hour to my trip to see this place. It's absolutely stunning.

Hope this helps. :)

I am a tour guide in Newport and often send people down to see this iconic lighthouse. Went there today for the first time this year and there are now No Trespassing signs everywhere. Very disappointing to treat our visitors this way.

A friend and I stopped by Castle Hill Lighthouse on a visit to Newport.

It was a 5+ minute walk down the dirt trail.

As it happened, several USCG personnel were there to give a guided tour to a group of young military pilots from overseas countries. We got to tag along with them. That made our visit special.

Castle Hill was the site of a watchtower built in 1740. It is at the westernmost point of Newport, Castle Hill was the logical site for a light and fog signal to aid mariners heading to Newport Harbor and up Narragansett Bay's East Passage toward Providence.

The present lighthouse was built right into the cliff face and almost appears as a natural feature of the landscape. It was completed in 1890 on property formerly belonging to the naturalist, oceanographer, and zoologist Alexander Agassiz of Harvard University. Agassiz sold the land to the United States Government for the lighthouse for $1.00.

The 34-foot tall granite lighthouse was first lighted in May 1890, with a fifth order Fresnel lens exhibiting a flashing red light visible for 10 nautical miles. The six-room keeper's house was a short walk away at Castle Hill Cove. In 1957, the light was automated and the fifth-order lens was replaced by a modern optic.

Castle Hill received wide attention in June 1989, when the Greek tanker World Prodigy ran aground on Brenton Reef to the south, spilling about 290,000 gallons of fuel oil. Station Castle Hill became the command center for the Coast Guard's response.

Today, it is still an active navigation aid for vessels.

Current Illumination: 300 mm plastic lens
Flashes red every six seconds - as of 2005
Focal plane: 40 feet
Range: 12 miles - as of 2005

Although still a very picturesque spot, there is not a much marine traffic as there was back in the era when the New York Yacht Club ruled the seas in 12-meter racing for the America's Cup, and all Americas Cup races were held in Newport. But, every now and then, the likes of former Cup defenders and contenders might sail by. Owned and chartered out by America's Cup Charters, the fleet includes:
- 1962 America's Cup Winner US-17 Weatherly
- 1958 America's Cup Contender US-18 Easterner
- 1962 America's Cup Contender US-19 Nefertiti
- Legendary two-time Winner 1967 and 1970 US-22 Intrepid
- 1980 America's Cup Winner US-30 Freedom - skippered by Dennis Conner
- 1964 Contender and Ted Turner’s infamous ocean racer US-21 American Eagle

Look for them by the US number on their sails. My personal favorite is US-22 Intrepid.

Beautiful lighthouse that is technically on private property. If you can access it you must go and visit. So peaceful and serene at least in the off season.

GPS was totally confused. Take the road to Castle Hill Inn and park in small parking areas along the road, There are paths leading through the woods to the lighthouse. Never saw any signs.

This was a great place to see the sunset. It's not easy to find - need to take a right off Ocean Drive past US Coast Guard facility and we parked near the marina (before the Inn), then walked up path to lighthouse.

Worth the drive to Castle Hill Lighthouse for the sunset. Watching the sun disappear into the sea is pretty magical
