Even though we arrived by 7.30 am, all car spaces were taken, so we had to park well away further down the road and walk up to the crater base. This appears to be a common fault of all the tourist spots we visited in Oahu. The walk up is designated as easy to moderate. I would say more on... More

Make sure you go early morning or after 2pm. That crater sure gets hot. Small bottle of water. Make sure go go restroom before the home. Wear comfortable shoes. Enjoy the view from the top..Awesome!!!

Great walk my husband and I are in our early early 60's we are very fit, which stood us in good stead for the walk. We walked to the monument via the beach and around the main headland (not knowing their was a short cut via the Honolulu Zoo just by the Waikiki Marriott Beach Resort. Beautiful view from the top. You can see the blue/turquoise water of the ocean and the waikiki beach. Easy hike / walk which can be done by everyone. A lot of people... i had the feeling i was in Central Station

I wanted to complete a few hikes while in Hawaii and this one did not disappoint for beginners like us! Definitely recommend as an early activity because you're going to sweat and with the sun beating down I suspect it could be not so desirable midday!

Protip: if the attendant tells you the parking lot is full, don't drive off, just waaaait in line until a spot opens up. I misunderstood and drove off and parked a 20 minute walk away.
