About
The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

- Emma WAuckland, New Zealand755 contributionsNice way to end the dayWe visited the Cemetery on our way back to Waikiki from Pearl Harbor. It was nice to end our day walking around the memorial, reading the information and taking in the impressive view. If you have a car on Oahu, don't miss going to National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 January 2024
- TofurryRenton, Washington1,063 contributionsLarge and peaceful cemeteryWe drove here after Pearl Harbor. It was quite a change from the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites. While there were so many people and tours at Pearl Harbor, we only saw a few people at this site. There is actually quite a bit to see here, including the Courts of the Missing, and the mosaic battle maps. The huge statue at the top of the stairs is a sight to see. And the cemetery is in a crater. Impressive.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 March 2024
- angeleyes27Brigantine, New Jersey5,336 contributionsPeaceful place for veteransThis beautiful cemetery isn’t far from downtown Honolulu. The main thing to see is the memorial with the mosaics at the top of the hill. Something is being built to the left of the memorial. There is a chapel in the middle and each of the places on the sides has names of those killed in action. Easy to find parkingVisited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 April 2024
- tammyBaltimore_MdBaltimore, Maryland3,932 contributionsBeautiful and HUGE cemetery honoring those who servedThe several times I've been to Honolulu over the years, this was my 1st visit. I walked from downtown which is quite a walk mainly uphill if you're fit but took the Bus back. Definitely a moving place to visit especially if you had family who served. The visitor center is nice, with helpful staff and bathroom. Then you walk or drive up hill until you see the vast area, with the memorial, halls, small chapel and mausoleums. Nice views of the ocean and Diamondhead from below and afar. Definitely worth a visit, around 2 miles from cruise port.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 22 April 2024
- MJ_ontheBAYHonolulu, Hawaii79 contributionsBeautiful place to honor our service members of the pastAlso known in local lingo as “Punchbowl” (the volcanic crater this Cemetery sits in), this is a well manicured, methodically planned veterans cemetery rich in history and plenty of space to stroll around and reflect. The view from the outer rim is excellent and gives you a clear shot of Diamond Head, the city and the ocean. I recently went to a memorial service here and even with hundreds of attendees, there was plenty of room to park and move around the site. A couple things to consider.. there’s no cost for entry, but the gates don’t open until 8am so no experiencing a sunrise from the overlook unfortunately. Also, when driving in, it’s not far from the H1 but you’ll head through a neighborhood with a lot of tight streets, abrupt turns and a couple of blind corners. Not the safest approach so just be careful behind the wheel.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 2 June 2024
- BrakiWorldTravelerBelgrade, Serbia19,452 contributionsUnique cemetery in a craterI must admit I've never heard about a cemetery being in a volcanic crater, so I put this high on my list to do. A short drive uphill from downtown Honolulu will first reward you with great city views. Then you pass the entry gate where's a huge cemetery in a crater. Majestic and solemn site at the same time. The whole cemetery is dedicated to WWII, Korean and Vietnam war victims. On the other side is a memorial with stairs leading to it, do go and visit.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 June 2024
- WPLandryFairfax, Virginia590 contributionsSomber, reflectiveThis cemetery is really quite beautiful. It's a very somber environment, as it should be. The grounds are very well-maintained and there is a wealth of information to read. We enjoyed a quiet walk amongst the gravesites towards sunset. It's definitely a place to visit while in the area. We spent our day at the Pearl Harbor sites and this felt like the appropriate way to end the day.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 June 2024

This place is a beautiful spot to look over the city of Honolulu and also to look over the resting spots of many servicemen that were killed in the pacific battles. You can feel the peace just by sitting and looking. The maps showing the battles is very informative and gives you an idea on the magnitude of the operation was to battle the enemy in so many places in the Pacific.

Actually came across this place by accident. Even from a distance it’s an impressive site and imposing sight. I’ve been to quite a few war memorials but what’s really amazing at this place is the craftsmanship on all the tactical battle maps which are made with what appears to be glass mosaics! The entire history of The Pacific war done as artwork plus the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

This, to me, is one of the 4 big national cemeteries: Arlington,Gettysburg, Normandy, and Pearl Harbor. The “punch bowl” as it’s called, is a beautiful grounds with many memorials and educational murals. It’s free, obviously. Learn about the entire pacific theater on these walls. Make sure to go up to the look out to see many organizational memorials and a wonderful view of Honolulu. I am happy to have shared this site with my children.

This is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. It is a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom. There are murals which depict the battles of World War 2 in the Pacific, Korea and Vietnam. The view over Honolulu is amazing from the entry gate. We inurned my father-in-law here, in a beautiful ceremony, provided by the Navy. It was just perfect for this WW 2 sailor.

Not only is this a tribute to our fallen heroes but also a walk through time. Perfectly manicured landscaping adorns the grounds with pathways offering views of the city, maps of conflicts throughout the world and access to pay respect to the endless men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice.
Works cannot express he sense of respect that overwhelmed me as I walked the grounds.

I love visiting old and historic cemeteries. I arrived by bicycle and once I entered the gates I was stopped by a gardener advising me I couldn't ride a bicycle inside. I was surprised and just walked my rented bicycle around. As I was looking at some of the headstones I left the bicycle on the grass. I was stopped by a security guard to advise me I can't have the bicycle on the grass. I've been to many many cemeteries around the world and sometimes I've arrived by bicycle and have never experienced these restrictions. So it's okay to drive your gas guzzling noise making car inside the grounds but not a quiet non polluting bicycle? Despite my experience I still enjoyed the atmosphere of this cemetery.

Where on earth can you find dignity, beauty and serenity in one place? This is THE place. The very first time we got there via a tourist trolley, we didn’t know what to expect. Once the trolley started going inside slowly, the presence of dignity and serenity were so strong that I just couldn’t deny its presence. The experience was so real and intense that we had to revisit this place on our very last day before departure. This is certainly one of the most memorable moments in our lives.

This cemetery is in a old crater and it has great 360 degree views. The interior marble floors has where all the Pacific battles were fought during WWII. There are also columns on the wall of all of the missing. I have a couple of cousins on these columns. This is one spot where I would like to join my cousins.

We were unable to get tickets to Pearl Harbor, but as an Army family, going to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific was also on our agenda. The cemetery is well maintained, and just walking around and paying respects to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice is overwhelming but something that is much needed. There is an open chapel along with wall plaques and various maps of images during the war to provide visitors with background on the time period and the events that were taking place.

My family would like to visit in December. Where does one park? Are there any fees? Do visitors generally park and walk through the cemetery or drive through the grounds? Thanks.
Written 29 October 2018
There’s no fees and ample parking. You walk the memorials and grounds, to include an overlook with commanding views of Honolulu & Diamond Head. To absorb it all in takes a good couple of hours.

Can one purchase Flowers to place at a grave site at the cemetery itself? If not, does anyone know if there are any flower stops close by? Regards

There are numerous flower shops that are right down the road in Chinatown that has beautiful flower arrangements. Safeway is also down the street at the corner of King and Pali. Nothing is sold on site.

I am so confused :( We are planning our trip to Hawaii and of course must include a visit to the Pearl Harbour Historic Sites but I cannot find a suggested self guided itenary anywhere of how to get around the following sites - USS Arizona, Battleship Missouri, Aviation Museum and Bowfin. I have a touch of OCD so cant just turn up and wing it I need to know start here .....move onto next place and so on. I understand that some sites need to be booked and we have purchased a Go Oahu Card to cover entrance fees (so no point in paying a tour guide for a formalised trip). Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Please I dont want to get home to Australia and be told we missed something :)
Written 24 October 2015
You will still need to get a ticket to go on the Arizona, I would suggest you get to the memorial early morning since there are a limited number of tickets available for the day of the tour. Most of the advanced tickets are taken by the tours. Once in the park, you can do the self guided tours of the Bowfin, Planes of the Pacific and the battleship Missouri. For the battleship you have a choice of a recorded tour, or can pay for a guided tour.
The Bowfin is in the park and you can walk to it. For the Missouri and Aviation Museum you will need to take a bus that boards behind the Bowfin Museum. There are several buses (motor coaches) doing continuous loops through both the Missouri and Aviation museums and returns back to the Bowfin.
May I also suggest doing a tour of Punchbowl and hiking Diamond Head? If you have a car, Saturday and Sunday there is a giant flea market at the Honolulu Stadium that will provide souvenirs from clothing to ukuleles.

I have been told taxis and buses are not allowed to stop inside Punchbowl. But rental cars are? Am I correct. Looking at the layout it does not seem there is a "parking lot" there but like most cemeteries, parking is allowed on the streets that traverse the property. Is that so? Are there any information sheets available at the entrance?
Written 20 July 2015
Tour buses don't stop there, but yes, rental cars can park there. I go whenever I am in Oahu because my husband is inurned there. The bus prohibition is to keep the atmosphere respectful. It is a beautiful peaceful place.

I've been to The Punchbowl, beautiful setting. We had our own transport but I'd like to know If you don't have a car and not wanting to do a tour, what's the best way to The PunchBowl Cemetery from Waikiki ? Thanks
Written 7 March 2015
Do we have to take a tour? Can we go on our own? Is there a entrance fee?
Written 8 February 2015
I see from the answer above (or below) that people are confused on where you're going.
If you are going to the "Punchbowl" cemetery that answer is FREE, no tours as it's a cemetery, no gate fees, and park where ever you can, it's a cemetery.
If you're going to Pearl Harbor, then the answer is;
Visitor center is FREE, and lots of parking. (This is where you had to start).
USS AZ memorial is FREE (limited free tickets, so get there early for them) There are tour packages out there the $$$ for the same tour. The only advantage, is that you can buy them on-line and you don't have to get there early)
Ford Island is an active military base, and the USS MO, Aviation museum, and a few other items are on it. So you CAN'T just drive on to it. There are shuttle buses that take you there from the Visitors Center. I believe the shuttle is FREE, but the USS MO and Aviation Museum has a fee.
