Two adults visited here on a Wednesday midday in early February and had a great visit. Spent about two hours total. We used our GoOahu passes to obtain entrance. Lots of plants to see. Mostly oriented towards trees. Could have used more explanations on plants or on handout. Several enormous tropical trees that we had never seen before.

Note neighborhood nearby is in almost a third world condition, like many other parts of Honolulu, so don't recommend exploring it on foot for safety.

It will reopen in August 2023 after about half a year of construction. The garden is a place of relaxation in a corner of the city, with plants familiar in Hawaii, towering trees native to the Philippines, unusual flowers and fruits, and greenhouses with orchids. You can also get a pamphlet on wild birds, so you can listen to the birds' calls while checking out the types of birds. The garden is not very large, so you can walk around it leisurely in about 30 minutes. It is about a 10-minute walk from Chinatown and Izumo Taisha Shrine, so it is easy to incorporate into your sightseeing schedule. Parking is free, and admission is $5 for adults ($3 for kamaaina).

We were pleasantly surprised by the Foster Botanical Gardens. It costs $5 and they give you a map for a self-guided tour. They have a good variety of plants and it is a bit of an oasis. The Lili'uokalani Gardens next door have great Banyan trees, and is worth a visit.

It’s well worth your time to visit this “garden” (it’s mostly trees), which is easily accessed by public transit. Be sure to pick up a guide to the trees. The guide directs you to 21 well marked trees, and gives a fascinating description of the trees and their uses in Polynesian culture.

This is a smallish botanical garden and they seem to focus more on trees than flowers. It is, however, a lovely park-like setting. Very green and serene with large open lawn space and also some themed sections. A wonderful place to sit and relax or read a book. The many different varieties of trees is quite amazing. For $5 admission per person you can't go wrong.

If you’re doing all the main botanical gardens in Hawaii, I’d give this one a miss. It’s basically a small city park, with a few interesting trees and flowers. Plus, note that it’s going to be closed for some weeks now for a construction project. So check it’s open before heading out.

If you’re staying in Waikiki and are looking for a change from the beach, coming to this park would be a good little excursion.

If you have a car and limited time, visit the Koko Crater Trail and gardens instead … far larger, very impressive, and free!

The Foster Botanical Gardens are a leafy green oasis smack dab in the middle of Honolulu. The ancient trees are amazing, just imagine what the world was like when they were young! The woman who greeted us at the admission booth was extremely helpful & informative.

We especially enjoyed the orchid collection in the greenhouse, they’re so beautiful & varied. All the ancient ferns were beautiful too.

We spent about 1.5 hours strolling the paths at a leisurely pace.

We definitely recommend a visit!

...right across Vineyard from Nuuano to River Streets and that whole chronic Chinatown area. Usually unsettles my stomach just being around here but found peace and sanctuary and even some beauty today at Foster Botanical Garden. First walked into the Kuan Yin Temple right by the parking lot. They got signs saying for visitors to stay away and that they only welcome members of the temple to come in, but I took a look anyway. Does anyone really have the right to stop me from shaking hands with the Buddha? I only spent a few minutes there and found my way to the botanical garden. I think I spent over an hour and a half here just wandering around the grounds and gardens - everything all very lush and beautiful, peaceful and serene. Mostly every tree, plant, and flowers is labeled quite well with these little green signs giving information like the scientific name and where it comes from. They also give you a pretty good map too when you pay admission and that tells you where everything is as well. It was not so crowded on the morning I came, so I really enjoyed my time here. I guess the highlight of the place would be the bodhi tree that is supposedly "descended" from original one the Buddha found enlightenment under way back in the day. The colors and fragrances from everything here was my high point. I really liked it all. They seem to have one of everything tropical from all over the world. One day soon, I'm gonna try to grab Dung and Grace and Rosalie to bring them here. I think they'd like it a lot too.

There were lots of interesting tropical trees and plants from around the world. A good portion were labelled. Admission was free because they were celebrating Pride Day. Normally we would have paid $5.00 each so that was a nice surprise. We went in the morning and it was not crowded.
