Good Starting Point but Much More to Experience at Pearl Harbor
The Visitor Center at the Pearl Harbor National Monument is where you can watch a 23-minute documentary film of the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941, and can explore 2 well organized museum exhibits, "The Road to War" and "Attack". You can also walk around the grounds and see the interpretive wayside exhibits and visit The Remembrance Circle all while taking in views of the harbor with the USS Arizona Memorial and the USS Missouri in the distance. All of this is free although parking is $7. The USS Arizona Memorial is also free but requires obtaining tickets in advance. The USS Missouri, USS Bowfin Submarine and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum all require separate entrance fees to visit. If you limited time, the Visitor Center experience gives you a good overview, but there is so much more to see when at Pearl Harbor.

Skip the VR, but do the taped narrative tour.
We paid for the delux combo narrated tour and VR through recreation.gov, but chose not to go to the Arizona memorial, USS Missouri, the sub, nor the aviation museum, and spent the better part of the afternoon just doing that. The tour was great- it adds so much more to the static displays of the two sections of the museum. Highly recommend if you’re into history or like museums. The VR was like a 70’s cheap movie - it may as well have had flip cards and painted on flames for realism. You can pay for just the tour for $12, or waste 10 minutes of your life and an additional $10 by buying the deluxe version like we did. Otherwise, the museum is open, so ambient weather will be what it’s like indoors. If you want to bring a bag in, you’ll need a clear plastic stadium bag to do so, as they don’t allow non-see through bags (not sure why not). All in all, the visit was very poignant and informative!

    Highly underrated
The visitor center itself has two interesting mini-museums in addition to multiple statues, artifacts, and signs outside that give you a lot of historical knowledge. I recommend getting the Visitor Center Official Multimedia Tour (its a set of fresh headphones and phone/tablet that you plug audio stop numbers into). The extra audio really adds to the experience in my opinion. I was expecting to only be at the visitor center for about an hour or two hours before moving on to the other connected attractions/museums like the Aviation Museum or the USS Missouri, but you can definitely spend 3 hours alone at the visitor center especially on a nice day if you want to read every plaque and listen to every audio stop. Also PAY ATTENTION TO THE BAG POLICY for the visitor center and its sister attractions/museums. They won't let you bring in bags bigger than a wallet, but you can buy a tote bag at the visitor center gift shop to care your stuff around in.

Before going, there was a choice between booking a tour or going on own. Booking a tour is the more convenient but more expensive option. If you plan it well, purchase tickets online and don't mind public transportation, you end up spending less and enjoying the same experience. Don't forget to book the USS Arizona memorial as there are limited spots and try to avoid weekends or holidays. Stepping foot on a submarine, a destroyer and bisiting museum sites are well worth your trip.

Personally, I think the information there about tours is as clear as mud. The people working at the counter were not helpful. We got in line for the boat and had to wait for almost two hours. Aside from that, we walked around on a self-guided tour of the museums (which were excellent). Moving experience.

We didn't prebook so we were only able to visit the "vistor's centre" which was fine with hubby and I. Since we aren't big historians. It was very interesting though, especially the reaccounts from survivoring sailors. Sad, but still very interesting.

We visited and did the “passport” day ticket. It is recommended on all the sites to allow 6-8hr for the day … unless you are extremely patriotic, walk very slowly or want to read every sign, you really don’t need this long!
We were there about 2-2.5hr and felt that was more than enough.
Be mindful you need to take shuttles between the sites, so depending how busy it is, allocate time for that!
Also be mindful that the day involves a lot of walking! Wear comfortable shoes.
The ship was most impressive and we enjoyed that the most - spending most of our time there rather than the other sites.
A good and interesting experience.

The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is a great place to begin your tour of the USS Arizona Memorial. It is open seven days a week from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. We visited it after our USPACFLT Historic Remembrance Tour. This is an ideal place to begin your visit. The visitor center, two museums and USS Arizona Memorial are free for everyone. In the museums, the history of Pearl Harbor before and after the attack and artifacts, newsreel footage and photos of life before the war. Be sure to explore the outdoor exhibits which have signs, plaques ad tributes such as the Remembrance Circle, an anchor retrieved from the USS Arizona, engraved names of the survivors of the USS Arizona and the Lone Soldier Statue. Also, moored here is the USS Bowfin, an attack submarine nicknamed “Pearl Harbor Avenger”. There is fee to tour the Bowfin. A bookstore, gift shop, and convenience store are available at the visitor center. Highly recommend visiting the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

We had a full day tour with “Travel Shack” and we can’t praise them enough.
Our guide Israel was absolutely fantastic, informative and interesting. He spent all day with us showing us around the Bowfin submarine, the USS Arizona Memorial and the USS BB Missouri. The tour was very moving while reflecting on the past atrocities.
When coming to Oahu Hawaii you have to come and pay your respects.
If you can go on a tour do it because there were a lot of people walking around and not really knowing what they were looking at. Plus if you go with Travel Shack Tours you skip the line.
