One evening we visited the statue to commemorate the famous Duke Paoa Kahanamoku (1890-1968), who was a famous Hawaiian surfer.

On the second floor of the first hotel in Hawaii, Moana Surfrider is some great memorabilia of Duke and the hotel offers a free historical tour of the hotel and lots of information about Duke.

On display are some of the original wooden surfboards.

It’s a nice looking statue.
Fairly well kept up.
A local hotspot and gathering place for surfers and compatriots.
Not really much to do. It’s a statue, you hang around and talk to people and take pictures.
It’s great for what it is.

Most of the time there is a line by Duke’s statue of people waiting to take pictures with him. He was definitely a surfing legend in Hawaii. The statue is really nice and a landmark at Waikiki beach. The park, sandy beach and ocean behind him are very nice and scenic but busy. People leave their leis on this statue. It’s also nice to see it in the evening.

You may dislike Waikiki (I personally really liked it to my surprise) but there is a cool vibe around this area despite the concrete jungle, traffic, homeless (the last very sadly common in this particular area of Waikiki/Oahu) - it's the surfers in the background, the Diamond Head and of course this statue of Duke Kahanamoku - I am not a surfer, haven't surfed in my life but felt the magic in the place and really enjoyed the early morning stroll in the area with a cup of great coffee from the nearby cafes.

Something I would call "a must" while in Oahu - the "surfing vibe" and shaka are all Hawaiian but out of our 3 weeks on the 4 main islands we "felt it" the most in Oahu, in this spot, I guess it's maybe the spirit of the Duke in the air :)

TIP: if you wake up like us early due to the jetlag/time difference I encourage you to grab a coffee at Honolulu Coffee near by and come here, it's super cool to watch people getting ready with the sunrise to catch the waves... something very special!

This larger than life statue stands in the very central part of Waikiki beach and almost everyone takes a pic in front of it.
However, I am not sure they also read the plaque beneath to learn who's this outstanding man - fastest swimmer of his era, winner of several Olympic medals, father of surfing and atop of all a hero who saved lives in California. Big respect.

It’s a fairly small statue on Waikiki beach. It’s a meeting point for some tours and it’s a popular photo opportunity. It’s a nice outlook with Waikiki beach and the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop. I am sure that it means a lot to surfers and locals.

Read up about Duke Kahanamoku before stopping to see him. There was a lot of construction happening on the beach, but it didn't take away from the amazement of this memorial. With the beach behind him, you can feel the love of the islands. Read up on how to dispose of leis - please don't just throw them away.

Duke Kahanamoku is covered with lei's and well worth seeing. He was quite the legend. We walked the sidewalk down the beach and it is the essence of Hawaii..palm trees, breezes, food...the works...Hawaii doesn't have the latest and greatest technology but they do have the best atmosphere.
