USS Arizona certainly had the greatest loss of lives, almost 1200, and maybe because of that it has the biggest memorial in all Pearl Harbor area.
Imo, USS Oklahoma memorial, another destroyed ship with its servicemen is maybe smaller than it should be, like a second grade one. It consists of equal white marble columns with victim names inscribed on them.
It's located by the spot where the shuttle bus leaves you for the USS Missouri and many people simply overlook it. From the whole bus only another couple and myself visited it.

Being an ex military man (British Army) this memorial needed no introduction. And as we were doing pearl harbour by ourselves on a US national park pearl passport without the hassle of a tour guide rushing you past things, we then had the luxury of pacing ourselves all day, and after we had been on the battleship Missouri we walked up to this well done memorial to the USS Oklahoma and the 429 sailors and marines who died on that fateful day in horrific circumstances. In all honesty you have to give credit to the Americans as they really know how to honour their war dead here, as only the Americans can do. Some people might say this is a "poor" tribute to a lost warship. But what people forget, there is no wreck like the Arizona, to look at or visit. So the next best thing is to recreate a fitting memorial to represent the lost ship and it's fallen crew.
When you do walk around this tribute you are to be reminded that each white panel represents a sailor with his name on it standing at attention and the black granite represents the hull of the ship, it isn't a big memorial but, very significant in it's meaning. Also bearing in mind some of the fallen crew are buried up in the punchbowl, most were also recovered a year or so later from the ship after salvage. The Oklahoma itself lies around 500 miles off Oahu after sinking en route to the US for scrap after salvage which took years to achieve, just remember this when walking around the memorial and pause for thought.
One thing people should also be aware of, is the Missouri is actually berthed on the very spot the Oklahoma was attacked and capsized back in '41. and is a fitting place for the mighty Mo to occupy, and it's only a 5 minute walk to the memorial and due to the tour buses not stopping and tour guides frog marching people around the Missouri and on to the Aviation museum, not many people get to see this touching tribute either which is a great shame. My advice is to read up on the history first and you'll develop a better understanding, there's also a ton of information to be had around pearl regarding this tragic event including the desperate failed attempts to rescue the trapped crew members inside, and the eventual salvage years later, just remember..!

The infamous Might Mo is docked off beautiful Ford Island. Military ID required to go on island. Most folks arrive by tour bus. And, most folks head right to the MISSOURI. Tours give you hardly anytime on the sites. My suggestion is to visit the USS OKLAHOMA instead. With the 20-30 minutes you have, you will be able to see, read and appreciate the Memorial. My husband and I lived on Ford Island for 3 months of our 4 years on Oahu. We first visited on the 75th anniversary of PH. They had a remembrance ceremony that was very moving. Read the the plaques, view the pillars and just realize where you are. Let us never forget or take our freedom for granted. Please give me a Heads Up vote if my review has been helpful to you and yours. Proud to call Las Vegas HOME.

One doesn't hear much about this memorial to the USS Oklahoma. It's located just outside the entrance to the USS Missouri. The Arizona Memorial gets all of the publicity but sailors and marines also died on the battleship Oklahoma on the day that Pearl Harbor was attacked. There are marble standards which represent the 429 crewmen who were killed on board this great battleship. Please take time and recognize this memorial.

This, combined with the Arizona memorial and Missouri make for a better understanding of that important time. This gives a much more complete picture because it hits at the enormity of the destruction and the enormity of the effort to recover from it.

This is so worthwhile to take a few moments tp pay respects, to the ship that suffered the second highest number of casualties in the raid

Ford Island is my go-to spot for talking walks. Normally, there are very few people out, and I'm usually alone on the Historical Trail that circles the island - still not wanting to be around people pandemically speaking. This memorial is located in a corner of the island where there are a lot of different monuments and sites to see: the Arizona memorial, the USS Missouri, and the USS Oklahoma memorial. I sort of always stop at this one to take a look and think about things. Very striking are the marble columns representing the 400 plus sailors and marines on the ship that died during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Incomprehensible the hell they were in when the ship capsized and sank. Dark and lonely spaces slowly filling with water - fearful men slowly waiting to drown. Those marble columns are arranged and meant to give the impression these men are still alive, manning the rails of their ship, still together forever. It sorts of makes them immortal I guess and most importantly, they will never be alone . Selfishly, I always wonder why I never had some kind of moment in time like they had - not that I would have wanted to have died young in the prime of my life as they had. I guess I just wish that at least at one point in all the years I had served, that I would have had such a moment where I was connected to the some of the others I had served with. No not me - I was just some sort of bureaucrat in uniform doing my own thing avoiding the others - avoiding deployment. And coming here to take my walks, passing by these monuments, it's like I'm still doing this same thing. Still alone avoiding others. Hey one of the black granite monuments around the outside of the columns state that after they raised the sunken ship, it "mercifully" sank in a storm while being towed to the West Coast. What's really merciful in this whole story and that these will always be together.

Such a beautiful memorial. So emotional to walk between the marble pillars. It is right outside he USS Missouri , so you an see both at the same time. Worth seeing both on the same day you visit the USS Arizona.

Here is a little piece of history that many people don't get to see or don't even know exists. Very interesting story about it from WWll. Most people learn about the big things in history and this is just one of those that sometimes get over looked.
