Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

This hike is honestly more like a walk in the park. The way up is uphill but it's nothing extreme or unmanageable. If you have kids and dogs you want to bring make sure you get there around 7am before it heats up. This is the driest hottest part of the island and you don't want to walk that incline... More

There's a way to actually hike up to the top of the pillboxes if you're looking from the lookout point. This is more of the adventurous way up. But, you can also bring strollers up if you walk up the winding road. There are gorgeous sunrises and sunsets from here (you can see Kokohead). Also, if you're here from January... More

You must be able to do some form of exercise to complete this hike. It is listed as a very easy hike and all people can do it. Not necessarily. The hike is 2 miles round trip. In the one mile to the top, it has a 600 ft elevation change. It is steep. It is also paved. I saw... More

I think the hike itself is easy even though it's all uphill. As the entire road is paved, you can hike up it at your own pace, much easier than if the road had steps. Views are excellent. If you take the bus, you end up at Sealife Park, and have to walk along the highway next to cars and... More

Went here last night to see the full moon rise. Awesome hike and also got a great sunset with a beautiful view of the moon. Be WARNED! We did not pay close attention to the parking instructions at the main parking lot. Even though we parked at the side of the road above the parking lot we were inside of... More

It's a nicely paved asphalt road--all uphill all the time. The road will turn from time to time, but the uphill grade is constant with no breaks. We were somewhat tired when we started out, but wanted to look for whales and spent a good 10 to 15 minutes at each lookout straining to see some, but did not. Otherwise,... More

If you have a medical condition that limits activity, DO NOT attempt this. Yes, the trail is paved but it is a steeper incline that is not possible for everyone. We encountered a young lady who was sitting down with her head between her knees trying not to vomit from physical exertion and heat exhaustion. However, if you make it... More

In all our visits to Hawaii, have never made this hike before. We did it on a Saturday morning which means that the parking lot was full at 7 a.m. we had to park on the road and walk in. There were a ton of people of all ages and by far not all were athletic. It's all uphill and... More

I have taken the time every trip to hike this trail. The views are incredible and we always manage to see whales in the distance. Disappointed that the lighthouse was covered this time, we assumed for some maintenance.

The hike up to the lighthouse was the widest, easiest path of anything we hiked in Oahu. Large part of this was because it was paved. The hike down to the shoreline is not really well marked but there are tons of cool offshoots with terrific beach spots. Bummer the light-house was under renovation when we went with no notice...
