Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

We stopped here on our drive around the island, and the view is amazing and my husband even noticed where the lookouts were in the rocks.

This side is the island is at a much slower pace than Waikiki Beach. You will mostly find locals at these pristine, less crowded beaches. The views are the most beautiful on the island. We wished we didn't wait until the last day to take this scenic drive. We would have spent a couple of days here. It's that sublime!

Makapuu is a one mile paved, wide, winding trail with little shade and no facilities. The parking are seems ample if you get there early enough. The "hike" was easy enough and the views from the top are incredible! The contrast of the vibrant blue water against the rocky terrain, as well as tide-pools below made for excellent views and... The trail is not very demanding (takes 40-60 minutes to go up) and it is a paved road so you can even do it with a stroller, but bring water and snacks because if the sun is powerful you will need a break at the top. Don't forget sunscreen!! You'll get an amazing view on the northeast shore and the... More

Unless you have a car or it is included on a tour, this is difficult to get to. I planned on taking the public bus #22 or #23 to Sea Life Park and walking back (uphill, on the highway. Just be careful and don't take kids. Not too far). Luckily our lovely bus driver just pulled up and let us... More

The Lighthouse trail is not extremely difficult but is a paved incline path. i recommend getting there early to avoid the crowds and beat the heat. Also during whale season you can see and hear them just off the coast.

I've lived on Oahu most of my life and have not done this trail. My cousin was in town and decided to hike it up to see the sunrise. The gates unfortunately don't open till 7 am so if you go super early, you will have to park on the side of the road. Just be careful because it's dark.... More

This walk is free including parking. No facilities here, well I didn't see any toilets. The walk is completely paved and could easily push a wheel chair or pushchair up to the top but not to the viewing ledge at the top though but very close. Lots of viewing points to gaze at ocean and coastline. Took about 30mins each... More
