Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Washington Place is across from the state Capitol and provides a great history of the early days of Hawai'i. Free tours are offered on Thursday mornings and I was sure to plan my O'ahu stay with time for this. The home served as residece for a wide range of occupants, including Queen Lili'uokalani and the Hawaiian state governors. Official functions and state dinners are still held in the beautiful formal dining room. The home has been carefully restored and has lots of interesting items on display. The docents share many stories of when the Queen was in residence. The tour lasts an hour and is worth a trip if you like history and stately homes.

This place is something most people don't think of as a historical place to visit. It is an important part of Hawaii's history leading up to modern times, but it wasn't until recent years did become open to the public for free tours every Thursday.
The tour space is very limited, so it is a good idea to plan in advance. You can easily book online to confirm available space. Again, it is free, so this is a no lose deal. The docents take you back in time to really help you understand everything about the property and events that have happened over time.
Being located next to the State Capital, Iolani Palace, and State Art Museum, you can make a day of it just touring Hawaii's history in one walkable area.
I don't recommend this for young children as it will be boring for them and they will disturb others who are trying to listen to the docent. This is a very adult and mentally mature type of activity.

Plan ahead because there is a bit of security at this historic house that used to be the Governor's Mansion. We went with a group that booked this very informative tour with the lady that had actually written a book about how and when the house was built, including why it became where the last Hawaiian Royalty lived, then many Hawaiian Governors. It has been beautifully restored and worth the trouble to learn all about it in person.

Built in 1847 the house looks like a southern plantation style mansion. It was the home of Queen Lili'uokalani the last Hawaiian Queen before she was deposed by the "provisional government" but these days it is the Governors House.

We stopped here after visiting and talking a tour of Iolani Palace which is located close to here. Washington Place is located in the historic capitol district of downtown Honolulu. It was built in the 1840's by a wealthy sea captain who was the father of Hawaii's last reigning monarch, Queen Liliuokalani. Washington Place served as the Hawaii State governor's mansion for several years, but today it is a museum that can be toured by the public with advance reservations. I would recommend seeing this beautiful place as it has so much history.

Sadly it was closed for renovations when we were there and while I understand the need for security the gates are boarded up so the only way you can actually see the building is by climbing up on the fence. Queen Liliuokalani lived here before the US took over Hawaii so we will have to wait until our next visit to look inside. When you rely on tourism during periods of renovation it is handy to at least have story boards and an indication of when access is expected.

Washington Place Foundation is the Official Hawaii Governors Residence and a National Historic Landmark. Used be a home of last Hawaiian Monarchy, Queen Liliuokalani where she was arrested during the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom by the US. This museum has many collection of Queen's personal belongings including a piano that she was composing many lovely songs, such as Aloha o e. You are able to attend one of Thursday guided tours, free admission, at Washington Place to learn more about Queen Liliuokalani and this a Greek Revival palace, built in 1847.
