Vicksburg National Military Park is a must see for any American. The civil war battle at Vicksburg was a turning point in the war, and is worth something time to reflect as experiencing. The preservation of the trenches, fortifications, and documentation of where Union and Confederate forces stood and battled is a tremendous experience for families and those curious about what civil war battles were like. The monuments for each state are a stark reminder of what each state lost in this historic and nation-defining war. As noted in the title, there isn't anyone available to advise when you arrive. It helps to read the maps in the parking lot. If you are up for a 3 mile walk, I strongly recommend walking the main road right from the parking lot and turning to return at the Mississippi monument. It is a great walk through the varied terrain and past some significant battle sites, including the site of the Confederate surrender.

Well maintained grounds. Many markers indicating troop locations and actions. Surprised at the terrain, very steep ravines in places. Hard to imagine thousands of troops hurling cannon balls at each other for over a month, a half mile or less apart.

This is a very large historical park basically surrounding Vicksburg. There are many miles of road and lots of monuments to the Civil War soldiers. Unfortunately due to Covid the toilet facilities were closed so just go before you visit.

We took the scenic loop drive and enjoyed seeing all the monuments and readings about each along the way. Due to COVID the visitors center was closed but we got a brochure on the park at the Mississippi welcome center. Looking forward to coming back with our bikes when we have more time. Well worth the visit.
