- Rick BRound Rock, Texas1,402 contributionsLarge body of waterBeing where it is I was amazed at the size of Yellowstone Lake. The waters appear to be very clear. Yellowstone Lake lies in the caldera of an ancient but still active volcano. 640,000 years ago the dome of the caldera collapsed creating the Lake as we know it today. Before the collapse Yellowstone Lake actually covered most of the Hayden Valley. There is a section of the Lake known as the West Thumb.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 September 2023

It’s a huge lake with mountains in the background. It also has some geothermal activity going on along the shores. You visit Mammoth Hotsprings and Lamar Valley. The snow coach and snow mobile starts after 15 December 2023. Its is good time to visit. - SwonQonDoiBoston, Massachusetts405 contributionsYellowstone LakeDuring our trip to the park, we drove around searching for a nice spot to see Yellowstone Lake. We finally found it when we arrived at the Fishing Bridge Visitor Center. This spot offers the opportunity to walk around the beautiful shoreline and enjoy the vastness of Yellowstone Lake. We were stunned by the size of the lake and its undeniable beauty. At this spot, you can see the endless blue lake stretching out before you, providing breathtaking scenery. Yellowstone Lake is the largest high-elevation lake (above 7,000 feet) in North America, covering approximately 136 square miles (352 square kilometers) with over 110 miles (177 kilometers) of shoreline. It sits at an elevation of about 7,732 feet (2,357 meters) above sea level. After seeing it for ourselves, it easily became a must-see destination that we would recommend to anyone visiting Yellowstone National Park.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 May 2024
- Rehoboth5Helena, Montana508 contributionsWorld class views, fun lake activitiesWe're Montanans, and try to visit Yellowstone every year or so. This year, we spent a little time along the lake, and greatly enjoyed it. The views across the lake, with all the mountains, are truly world class. We tried a little fishing from the Gull Point picnic area. Some very nice picnic spots on the lakeside. We saw a kayak tour along the lake near the lakeside thermal areas. Someday, we'd like to take our canoe out on the lake. However, be aware that winds can come up quickly and make self-propelled boating dangerous. And there are also motor boats on the lake, some of which go way too fast and kick up significant wakes. So....plan carefully, be prepared for bad weather, follow park rules, slow down and be respectful.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 June 2024
- Robert D4,257 contributionsBeautiful LakeIf you visit West Thumb Geyser Basin, you can walk a long boardwalk trail that goes along the shores of Yellowstone Lake. There are many geothermal features to see along the trail. Yellowstone Lake is quite large and you can access it at several places.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 5 July 2024
- EdwelshNorth Canton, Ohio7,156 contributionsHuge beautyWe drove by this lake for about 1/2 hour. It’s massive, like one of the Great Lakes back in the Midwest. We stopped at West Thumb and walked down to the shoreline. I like the story about hot spots in the lake and how the fish have adapted. It’s just another fantastic feature in a fantastic National Park.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 August 2024

Yellowstone lake cover 136 surface miles and it is the largest high elevation lake in North America.
Interesting fact is that there is no fishing allowed from the “fishing bridge” since 1973.
Yellowstone Lake runs through numerous parts of the park but we found the best view to be on East entrance road. I would highly recommend Steamboat Point picnic ground for awesome views of the water during a stop for lunch or dinner. Steamboat is just a mile or so east of the fishing bridge. Enjoy.

If you have some extra days here, you should spend at least one of them exploring the lake and its surroundings. This is apparently the largest high elevation lake in North America. The routine water temperature is too cold to safely swim in for more than a handful of minutes, but fishing and boating is permitted consistent with the park's regulations. You can explore the West Thumb area where hot spots and fumaroles abound and seem to contradict the coldness of the lake. if you're here near winter, this is a particularly scenic snowy location. If you move north from here, you'll pass a number of lakeside picnic spots as well as the serene scenic loop of Gull Point Drive. Fishing Bridge/Lake Village is the commercial center and then you can continue south along the lake's north and east borders. You'll find an overlook point as the road starts to drift away toward Cody. Hikers can follow the east flank south. The park service concessionaires offer guided activities on and around the lake. Take advantage of these if you like.

Most people likely snap a few pictures of the beautiful lake or enjoy a scenic cruise. However, Yellowstone Lake has the largest population of wild cutthroat trout in the country so it may be more interesting to anglers. We enjoyed a sunset picnic and some cutthroat fishing from shore. Know that cutthroat trout are catch and release only in Yellowstone Lake.

The park itself was awesome. The hotel room was very small (Grant Village Lodge), but the room was clean. The beds are only fulls, not queens. As for the food management company, they are terrible! I guess the hours are supposed to change next year, but don't expect the small restaurants to be open as long as the general store that it is in.
The general stores are closed at 6:00, which doesn't make much sense since you'll spend most of your day out in the park and then come back to get something from a general store that's not even open at around that hour. The food service restaurants inside of the general stores closing hour earlier, at 5:00. So if you're planning on eating, be there before 5:00. That of course digs into your timing for traveling around the park.
There are full service restaurants available, but three of them require reservations and you can only reserve at those if you stay in the park. We ate at the Grant dining room where the food was decent. The Lakeshore Lodge that serves tacos was atrocious. Essentially, expect bare bones, food quality with teenagers doing all the work because they can't find people to come to the park to work. And since you have no other options for food outside of bringing your own cooler, I think they're feeling is... Good luck to you!
One last thing to mention, if you happen to be coming in from the south side of the park near Jackson's hole, expect to be charged for two national parks. Parks. We had to pay $35 to go through the Teton Park just to get to Yellowstone and then pay another $35. It would have taken hours to go over to the eastern entrance instead to avoid this. Any person who comes in from any of the other entrances and then comes down through the park of Yellowstone into teton, doesn't have to pay. It's a really lame situation for those coming in from the south. All other entrances pay $35 into Yellowstone and have access to Teton without a charge. If you come in from the south, expect to pay $70 total.

Such a beautiful, tranquil lake. Huge!
We started in the West Thumb section of the lake, hopping out and roaming the shoreline while taking a look at some of the hot springs that are formed around the lake. But we drove all the way up the western side of the lake and along the Yellowstone River and it’s Grand Canyon. Just gorgeous!
There are picnic areas to stop and enjoy, plus the Canyon Lodge is right on the lake. SoectCular!

We enjoyed stopping a few times in Yellowstone to view beautiful Yellowstone Lake. Our first view was at the Butte overlook and our last was at the West Thumb Geyser Basin. The water is so clear and blue and with the Teton range in the background it was just magnificent.

No matter what loop you make around the Park, you will pass by Yellowstone Lake and it's definitely worth a stop. There is a few geysers right around the Lake as well as many colorful steaming pools of water. As you walk the board walk around, you'll also see geysers in the water which is interesting. On the day we came we got to see some elk up close. Bathrooms and a visitor station are located here.

Yellowstone Lake is a beautiful gem in the national park and a calming contrast to the other natural wonders of the park.
Crystal blue water mirrors the mountains and trees under clear blue skies. Be sure to drive over to Yellowstone Lake and take time to sit and admire the awesomeness. God was having a good day when he created this lake.

We stayed at Grant Village. Each night we'd take our beverages down to the lake and either sit at a picnic table or sidewalk wall and look over the lake. I will keep those memories forever. The sand is course and black. The mountains in the background were beautiful. We saw canoes and other small boats. Water was chilly---most likely would not go swimming even on a hot day.

We booked a two hour guided fishing tour last minute due to a cancellation- we were happy there was an opening. Our guide was Jack and he was AMAZING. Four of us went and two of our group fished. To get off the road and out of the car onto a boat skimming across the water of Lake Yellowstone was incredible. A knowledgeable guide, Jack was also personable and made the 2 hour trip fun and informative. The guys caught fish and we ladies relaxed on the boat, taking in the sights. We heartily recommend the experience.

At the Lake hotel, does anyone know where the business center is located (with computers for guests to use)?
Written 2 October 2017
I did not stay there, however, I would contact the hotel and ask them, try searching Yellowstone hotels here on trip advisor to
get connected. I stayed at Grant Village and was able have the staff at the Lodge at Old Faithful help with a question and a
hotel change. Have a great and safe trip

As others have said, it may be difficult to get there, but if you can (and tough it out), I suspect it would be really beautiful. No waterfalls, I imagine.

Boat ride sounds a great idea. Are there numerous companies? Which di you select? Where are they located on the lake? What is the charge per adult?
Thank you

Hi, need advice from someone who has visited Yellowstone National and knows the area over all really well. I am a 28 year old guy taking my parents currently in their 60s. Please advise sites which are friendly for elderly people since my parents won't be able to do hiking or walk too long on steep trails. These are the list of places I have chosen to visit with my parent since we will mostly driving around with our car:
Please tell me if any of these spot requires too much walking or has steep trail?
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
Artist Point
Old Faithful
West Thumb Geyser Basin
Geysers - Mud Volcano Area
Midway Geyser Basin
Norris Geyser Basin
Biscuit Basin
Boiling River
Firehole Canyon Drive
Upper Geyser Basin
Lower Yellowstone River Falls
Written 12 July 2016
Avoid going on trails to Canyon falls the upper and lower falls, they are bit steep and not recommended for old people with heart and breathing issues. Artist point gives a good view of the lower falls from a distance. Mammoth Hot springs has a steep trail with lot of stairs. But drive up to the trerrace area to have a good view of the whole mammoth hot springs Terraces without much of strain.

Any recommendations about time of day to take the cruise? Is it cold in morning/evening? We will be there 1st week of August.

Had a few questions, there are 19 of us going, my wife and I our 4 children and their spouses along with their children arriving from 3 different states. Is there a place where we can gather in the evenings perhaps around a camp fire? Also a couple of the kids have severe food allergies, if we brought the food that they need could the hotel refrigerate and prepare it, we are staying in the frontier cabins at the Lake Yellowstone hotel and to my knowledge are unable to at the cabins.
