If you go in the late afternoon or at dusk, you are usually able to see Bison. On one later afternoon trip here, we saw a herd of about 50 bison down by the river!

We drove thru around 6:30 p.m. and herds of Bison everywhere - they were in the middle of the road just strolling! We got some great pictures. We were told to drive thru this area after 6 p.m. to almost guarantee seeing bison. We were...More

One of my favorite places in the world! Everything is the way it should be with very little interference from man, except to insure it stays as is forever. You can see all of the wild animals that you want right in this one spot....More

This area was full of Buffalo. We saw them near, far and in between. Big ones, small one and in between ones.

We didn't get the OMG bison experience, but we did see ~100 bison on the drive. We saw one really close to the road. The drive was pretty. I think the bison were mostly in Lamar Valley.

Nice area to view some wildlife at dusk. You’ll see bison and elk as well as ducks and geese pretty easily. We hiked part of this added on to our South Rim trail hike.

We were encouraged to come here by rumours that a wolf pack was heading this way. In the end the wolves did not show up. That is how it is with wildlife. Still there were rare pronghorn; the deer which looks like a goat and...More

I suppose if you go during dawn or dusk, you might see some animals but when I visited in the late afternoon, there was not one animal in sight. It was a total waste of time. I had better luck at Lamar Valley.

Absolutely outstanding; taking in the natural beauty, geysers and wildlife. We spent an engaging hour watching the bison herd under the tutelage of a ranger who was really informative and helpful to all, a real credit to the national park. There were numerous pauses on...More

We loved our drive through the Hayden Valley. We saw tons of bison and on our way back up through the valley from Lake Yellowstone, we were caught in a bison traffic jam and had a front row seat. It was amusing to watch them...More

I would imagine that the best viewing times are early morning and dusk when their prey is also active. Keep in mind that September, being later in the season, is possibly when bears are getting ready for hibernation... More
