While not the only place in the park to see wildlife, the Hayden Valley is a prime area. Get there EARLY, 6:30am to 7:30am at least, and take it slow. Wildlife is unpredictable, but the earlier you are out, the more likely you are to see it. Listen to the Rangers! They are there to help you stay safe and... More

This is one of the best places in the park to view wildlife... lots of bison walking along the road. Lots of elk as well... must do in Yellowstone!

An old lake bed with some persisting water features, this valley (elevation 8000 ft.) is surmounted only by the mountainous peaks that border it. If you want to see a herd of bison (30) then head for Hayden.

We spent time in both the Lamar and Hayden Valleys looking for wildlife in general and bison in particular. Hayden is more open and larger. We saw a lot a bison, and enjoyed a leisurely drive with occasional stops. Drive through Hayden, and stop in Lamar.

Get out, explore - but, take your time. There is so much to see in do around Hayden Valley and so much wildlife but it takes patience. Also, please be respectful - follow the driving/parking rules in the park. This is truly amazing and beautiful country that should be enjoyed by all!

This has rivers, trees, mountains and wildlife, all at the same time. Take a drive past this valley and enjoy the beauty from your car. There is a good chance you will also see herds of animals. We were able to pull over and watch as a huge herd of Bison charged across the plains.

We were extremely lucky on our second visit to Hayden valley as we were able to watch a pack of wolves (in distance) and a grizzly bear feeding on a elk carcass. It was once in a lifetime experience as we heard the wolves howling and watching the bear feed on the carcass for more than an hour. There was... More
