We met James, our guide at the Wanaka waterfront by the marina. We were lucky and had a smooth 25 minute ride out to the island with the typical amazing views of the Wanaka landscape. We were in a group with one other family and our guide which provided some intimacy to the excursion. It was easy to hear everything... More

Thanks for the detailed review! Just a little correction if I may, The Kaka bird is a rare flying parrot and (at this stage) is not yet back on this introduced predator free island - With our planted trees as they mature, like fine wine, we will see the full benefits returning to the pure NZ bio diversity, with food... Eco tour guide Chris is devoted to the preservation of the endangered Weka, and his knowledge and enthusiasm for the project make this a fascinating tour. The additional preservation efforts for two other species on the island are a bonus. This is not a mere lecture, either, but a lovely hike in a beautiful setting, and for those willing to... More

Thanks for this review, regards the ugly bug, funny you should mention it, as one translation of it's name - WETA - is "The God of Ugly things"! in Maori language. However, scientifically it is the largest insect in the World that can be frozen down to neg 10 deg C for an extended period of time - Days, months,... More

Today we joined James from ecoWanaka for the half day cruise out to Mou Waho Island Nature Reserve. Unfortunately a rather brisk southerly sprang up about an hour before departure but James was confident it'd be fine! However for the entire boat trip there and back, we didn't see one other boat on the lake ... To say it was... More

thanks for your great review, it certainly is an island worth perservering for! Once you are on the island everything is good. Wanaka has had a lot of wind this year, and a southerly is unusual, due to a big front dumping rain on the West coast, missing us in "Semi desert" Wanaka. On the Boat and in Jame's pack... More

This trip was really worthwhile as the scenery was stunning. You can do it independently however best via 4WD as road rough & many river crossings. Our guide Heidi was the only downside as she was a bit moody & bossy & felt like the trip was more about her needs than ours which was disappointing.

Thanks for the review, we love this trip ourselves into this valley, we do pride ourselves on giving you the best experience in this special part of the World heritage Mt Aspiring national park. The Mou Waho trip is a genuinely lovely activity – the island reserve is beautiful and the hike up to the top is pleasant with interesting stops to talk about the flora and fauna, and general conservation issues. The weka, which passengers seem to be quite likely to meet, are relatively unworried by people being around, and beautiful. We also... More

Great that you all got to "Meet the WEKAS" ! we have a baby carrier on board as well, and have Lifejackets to fit all ages of kids. (Our local boating law requires all children 12 and under to wear a lifejacket). kids under 5 years are free anyway on our tour to Mou Waho Island. We would love to... More

We went on the tour to Mou Waho with Steve, had an excellent time. We enjoyed his passion for the environment and sharing that with the customers. He treated us to some great stories and even taught everyone a little about how to create cool panorama shots on our cell phones. We were very sorry that the weather prevented us... More

However, Mou Waho is accessible most of the time on the cruise/walk and we love showing you young folk how to get the full potential out of your Samsungs... More

Great half-day trip. There's a lake at the top of the island. We had wonderful weather. The views were fabulous, the cruise enjoyable. Best of all was learning about and seeing the birds and the conservation work they are doing. It was a hard uphill hike and some loaner hiking sticks would have been helpful, but a superb trip! Highly... More

The founder & operator, Chris, is just passionate about the area & its environment. His knowledge & delivery of that is entertaining & outstanding as well as being so friendly & welcoming. Mou Waho Island & Wanaka are beautiful places & these tours really showcase them perfectly.
