Wanaka appeared to be a community based upon tourism. The lake makes this town special and provides a community feel allowing people of all ages to sail, picnic, swim and relax and enjoy the spectacular views. There is a selection of shops and eateries acting for all requirements

Passing through from Queenstown we noticed quite a difference. Wanaka had more family/older couple tourists, whereas, Queenstown was younger (18-25) tourists. When you walk around you can see why. Wanaka is slower paced, with beautiful walking tracks and boutique cafes and pubs. Walking around the town, it seemed like every cafe/restaurant was packed out. Wanaka is a nice town to... More

We preferred this place to Queenstown, it was not as busy, but still plenty of activity, restaurants and shops. Fantastic surrounds and awesome hiking in the region. Probably our fav place in NZ!

Any traveler visiting to South Island certainly visits Queenstown and Wanaka Area. While Queenstown is a busy and bustling area, Wanaka is a quieter sibling. I loved Wanaka area and it is quieter and equally beautiful.

Wanaka is such a nice place to visit and it's like a new Queenstown! There is loads to do here and I really enjoyed my time here. The bars are awesome and the CBD is all close and walking distance. Plus it has a New World!

We stayed here for 2 nights. Lovely village, super clean, walking trail around the lake, and plenty of boutique shopping.

This has a more relaxed pace than Queenstown, no traffic jams here. If you cants stay over here then make sure to visit. Great Resturant's, shops and places to stay. Highly recommend

We went on a Bank Holiday Monday and were a little annoyed that some outlets charged a 15% bank holiday premium. Nonetheless great views, fun people and superb ice cream so a great place to visit.

A must visit if you are in the region. Personally I prefer Wanaka over Queenstown, simply because it's less crowded, smaller but more beautiful and super friendly! Don't forget to check out the most photographed tree in the world (just by the lake): the Wanaka Lone Tree, aka #thatwanakatree
