For one it's gorgeous. In January and February at least it is warm enough for swimming. Surrounded by steep mountains Lake Wanaka is an absolute gem. There's loads to do and eat just like Queenstown but better.

I spend some of stay in Wanaka (2 weeks) down or around the lake. there are plenty to do, Parasailing, Paddle boarding, jet-skies, etc or just relax, swim and look at the stunning views of the mountains.

What a beautiful spot and great people. Away from the bussle of Queenstown but easier to drive there if needed. Loads of activities, great restaurants and bars. Everyone so relaxed So many activities too. Very happy in our choice of destination

Wanaka is beautiful on its own, but does not have the hustle and bustle of queenstown, still maintaining its charm. There are so many great activities around the lake in Mt Aspiring National Park and right next to Lake Hawea

We arrived on a sunny day. The water was sparkling, people were swimming and using paddle boards. With the mountains in the background, it was a gorgeous sight. Although the town is more built up than in the past, it is still a pretty small...More

At first, we tried the beach in town. This was a no go as the lack of shelter from trees meant it was like being in a wind tunnel. We then tried Eely point (far left side) which had a lot of trees to provide...More

Wanaka is a great Base for some fabulous walks. We got some good tips from the local information centre (they are always good in NZ and are worth visiting for local tips). We had intended walking up Roys Peak but the information Centre people told...More

If you want some exercise, the nearest Big Hill is Mt Roy. Drive 6 km N to the car park on the W of the road. The higher you go, the more you can see.

You might do the stargazing tour at the top of the Skyline Gondola before you leave Queenstown. It is excellent and the telescopes and commentary are first rate. They start at 10PM and go for about an hour and the sky is... More
