Beach full of smelly algae ( been there on February/March )
and garbage. Most of the day swimming is not possible due to low tide. Big disappointment...

To start with some disclaimers as a matter of fairness: First, the beach and water colours are still quite scenic and give an idea what this place must have been like many years ago. Second, we are travellers who usually look for sustainable, authentic tourism and off-the-beaten track destinations and only sort of accidently ended up staying three das at Kiwengwa.

What we have seen was really disappointing for us and was simply not how we prefer to spend our holidays: One hotel next to the other, many "All-Inclusive" style and most of them owned by Italians, small shops and restaurants as far as you can see. Plastic is basically everywhere you look on the beach and seems not to worry any of the hotel owners, nor guests. Kiwenga village right in the back of the back seems poor and widely disconnected from the tourism scene right in front - leaving a somewhat "uncomfortable contrast" as also described by Lonely Planet. Tourists are mainly Italian and restaurants praise having an "Italian chef" and a varied selection of pizza and pasta as unique selling propositions. There is barely any opportunity to get a glimpse into local life beyond meeting locals in stores or when they offer you various tours around the island at the beach. For us Kiwenga was just not the right place and we were really relieved when we could leave for quieter and more authentic Matemwe, which definitely is more our style.

Having been delayed by Qatar Airways nothing to do with the hotel then our approach to our accommodation after entering the gates to resort was wow thatched roofs African decor etc very polite welcoming staff. Different blocks named after animals etc

Check in simple and quick.. shown to room great arriving late we simply showered and went for a refreshing drink then off to bed.

Bit of a noisy creaky bed but hey ho the room had a king and single 4 poster bed with mozzi net. Room equipped with mini fridge electronic safe dressing table tea / coffee making facilities 2 bottles of water per day. Bathroom was large with single sink and shower hairdryer shave point mirror etc 2 bath towels and 2 hand towels changed as required (we did approach reception once because hand towels had been taken away and not replaced but very next day had been placed in room).

We went to our first breakfast and was pleasantly surprised the buffet restaurant was large and plenty of places to sit. There was a super cold room and fully equipped with plentiful fruit salad bar cheeses hams etc and the bread bar was super cereals yohurts etc the coffee tea facilities were help yourself with coffee mugs hot cold milk teabags and chocolate all available. 6 sorts of water juices etc

Egg counter omelette fried eggs etcqueue that was fast moving cooks were super swift there is separate counter for pancakes always plentiful same with waffles etc other items available potatoes bean stew vegs etc. Also a oats counter to help yourself

Always plentiful always choice no you cannot get a full English but 3/4s there don't expect bacon !

We then went to collect pool/beach towels. Because we waited to see the REP about excursions etc we were to late for a bed on the beach but took one around the main pool. This was warm and welcoming after sitting in the very hot sunshine.

We learnt to be up earlier to get a beach bed and parasol (with the vast beach front maybe put a few more parasols up to avoid visitors disappointment.

There is security and like another beaches around the world you have hawkers/land sharks whatever you want to call them are ready to pounce but hey a firm no and that is enough. Of course lots dressed up as masai warriors if you ask for a photo expect to pay. They will ask to supply you with trips goods etc that's at your choice nothing to do with hotel. Sea is very warm bring beach shoes can walk out quite a way.

Beach bar could do with some extra staff at times

Lunchtime large choice of meals salads pizza ect couldn't tell you if burgers or fries etc we don't normally have lunch after a plentiful breakfast and looking forward to evening meal etc

After the beach a few drinks back yo room to shower and get ready for evening meal. The water was always hot. Beware there is a few power cuts that lasts minutes not hours. Main restaurant again plentiful but 2nd week is repeated. We were invited to seafood restaurant and went once I myself love it but hubby isn't a fan at all. We thought that there maybe a choice for non seafood lovers but sadly not. African restaurant was a favourite very much a take on Indian restaurant samosa bargies curry pilau rice chapati no no poppadoms!

New years eve was a fabulous meal and celebration with party on the beach good to see the staff totally enjoying themselves...

Now in other reviews we have read about staff asking gor tips etc well hand on heart we never seen this at all. Rude staff absolutely NOT yes overally attentive but in asking questions like were you are from. Staff do get to know from your own information given about when you are due to go home. We do tip on our last days but this is our choice and not badgered into it.

Also another comment if your british don't come to this resort. We go away to a country to see the culture and meet the people. Make new friends etc however at this time we were the only British couple at this hotel but in asking the staff its because its not supported but direct flights so its a very long haul to get there. Also we booked via TUI thinking they have a monopoly in this hotel but NO they do not please note everythjng you pay TUI for you can sort yourself if you have a problen like we did the words were your flights are with Qatar you need to take up with them. Problem with room for instance take up with hotel staff etc. This hotel is mainly French and Italian the animation team which would normally bother the life out of you left you alone once they knew you were british. Any activities wasn't offered to us things were announced over the beach speaker but defo accomdated the French etc. Music was occasionally boom boom boom but then on the other side very calm and soothing. SPA people answer was yes or no and then they left you alone we can say we were sat tanned dressed and ready to go home and one guy from spa came amd welcomed us and asked if we would like to visit the spa hello too late mate going home !

The following was not booked through hotel so nothing mentioned is nothing to do with them.

In regards to trips we had come with the idea of booking a 2 day safari which we did via the TUI Rep but again you were handed over to a tour company if any problems or questions etc

The 2 day safari was fantastic from collection at 4am I'm the morning arriving at the airport boarding a small plane landing on a sandy airstrip in tge middle of national park into a jeep and let the safari begin. We saw plenty of animals (dont expect to see rhino the have placed them in a hidden lication until numbers improve due to poachers) stayed in a lovely little hut went on a bush walk river boat tour etc and enjoyed it all I mentioned via text yo the TUI rep could of done with an itinerary but again was told up to tour company. This was a disappointing answer because we did not know in advance we would be visiting a school otherwise could of taken sweets or pencils etc however you only knew when you got to the school and guess what a little shop full of sweets to buy however you are in the middle of a poor village but a sweet shop that was full of catering bags of sweets. So if you had a $10 note that's how much they were or 5000 tanzanian shilling note that's how much they were so please beware if you are going to do a 2 or more day safari a scam at the end take sweets or toys with you!!!

To the hotel staff thank you for your hospitality.

To karim general manager slow down you cannot please everyone.

Kind regards

Julie & Mark

Lovely beach, friendly locals, many Italians. Everybody happy, Jambo, and welcoming, Karibu. Pole Pole certainly captures the pace! Hakuna Matata..
Quite a sea breeze, sometimes whipping up the sand making it unpleasant, but great for kite surfers.
White sand, but lots of weed and muddy patches in the ocean.
Hawkers friendly, and not persistent. Gifts reasonably priced, and massage $20. Food and drink expensive - Western prices +

Lovely white sand. The sand is fine and very firm. Motor and quad bikes, as well as bicycles go along the beach, leaving hardly visible tracks. Foot prints are difficult to see. In the sea there is coral, so you need rubber shoes if walking out beyond the low tide mark. Beach patrolled by security guard. There are no lifeguards. There are occasional beach boys selling items or tours. The tide brings in a small amount of seaweed. High tide covers the beach. There are fishing/seaweed traps off shore, opposite Sultan Sands Hotel, about 100m out, consisting of stakes in the ground, not visible when the tide is in.
