About
Gaustatoppen, which many claim to be the most beautiful mountain in Norway, towers majestically above the town of Rjukan at an altitude of 1,883 metres. Around 30,000 people make the trip up to the summit every year to enjoy the fantastic views from the top. On a clear day, you can see all the way south to the coast and east to Sweden. You can see one sixth of Norway from here. No matter what the weather is like, you can still buy a cup of coffee, waffles and food at the Tourist Association's 100-year-old stone cabin on the summit. You can pick your own stone from the piles around the summit and get it stamped to prove that you climbed the mountain. A new alpine slope down Gaustatoppen is planned, but this is no new idea. Had it not been for the Second World War, the alpine disciplines at the 1940 World Championships would have been arranged here.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The weather was exceptional. We were a bit slow down and the bus driver (for the bus includes in the ski pass) waited and drove us all the way home when the lifts had closed. Would definitely reccomend Gausta for families. Great views and super friendly and service minded personnel. 5/5 we will come back many times

For second time in my life I went to Stavsro for walking up to Gaustatoppen. I thought I have been learning of my mistake for many years ago when I walked to fast in the beginning but no. I walked so fast and passed a lot of people and come up to 3.5 km of 4.7 then I meet the wall.

This saturday I didnt see nothing almost because of very much fog. And I could not remember that it was so much rocks to pass. I was thinking that this shall I never do again.

I come to top but was totally finished. I bought WAFFLES with jam and tried to relax but I was in the end of the tunnel with my shape.

Bought diploma also as prove even I have photoes who are very bad.

Took elevator down and a transfer bus up to Stavsro because of shape and weather.

I give it a three on score because I fixed the walk alone in not good shape.
I should not have walked so fast and taken some food and drinks with me.

I used 1 hour and 45 minutes up. There are different meaning what is fast and what is slow.

After visiting the area in chilly weather all you needed was a fresh baked waffles. I and familie went there during the fall season and it was already the mountain covered with snow, The snow bring their own beauty and was delightful to see such a lovely view from distance.

We went on a hike to the top and was really surprised to see how well the trails was marked - we came in mid August, so there weren’t that many people around, which was very nice. We had lunch at the top and the restroom facilities were good and the little coffee shop offers cold drinks and snacks.

To many slow moving people in the track to completely enjoy the hike.
The transfer bus from Gaustablikk høyfjellshotell was great.
Next time I will take the tram down the mountain.

Not for the fair of heart! This walk is for those with strong ankles and knees. The view from the top was overwhelmingly beautiful! I won't forget it!

We had a great walk to Gaustatoppen. No problem for the youngest kid which is 10 years. The parking lot was nearly full when we arrived at 10. It was a bit cloudy but No more than we had some view from the top.

My teen son and I walked from Stavsro to Gaustatoppen while the third person in our party didn't want to walk so he took the Gausta"train" up and down. We ended up beating him to the top and to the bottom of the mountain because the waiting time were too long for those who didn't want to climb the mountain on foot. We are used to hike in the mountains and found this route easy as there has been much work done there from the Sherpas from Nepal, the trail was friendly and we used 1:49 hours up and around 1:18 down. It is a very stony place so proper shoes are recommended.

We were lucky with the weather and the views unfolded quickly after ascending a few minutes, truly beautiful. Once arriving to the top there is a DNT tourist cabin and one can buy souvenirs, coffee, Norwegian waffles, connect to the WIFI if needed, take a break to eat your lunch. There are the toilets.

After arriving in Stavsro on our return, we decided to walk towards the other parking lot outside the Gaustabannen where our fellow traveler had parked, that was around 4 km and an easy walk on a sunny day, but it is possible to take the shuttle between parking areas.

We hiked the mountain with our 7 and 4 year old, the latter on our backs mostly.
It was very nice, but very very crowded
The train down had 2 hrs wait, so we hiked down as well.
