We are tourists from Canada who recently visited Termas das Caldeiras on a whim while exploring the Ribeira Grande area. There was a special on that day: 35 euros for a facial, massage, and the thermal baths, so we thought we'd give it a try. Big mistake! We had instant regrets when we entered the small room which was dark and dingy. The girl providing the treatments applied the volcanic clay facial without doing any sort of prior face washing or skin prep (we had been wearing sunscreen!). Most concerning was the state of the clay itself - it had been sitting in an open container which was already in the room, and also already had a brush/applicator in it. The attached image shows the container and brush. I was concerned that they were using this on multiple people, which turned out to be true as once they finished applying my mask I watched them "double dip" and apply the mask to my partner using the same container and same brush. Very unhygienic!!! Once the mask had dried I was told to get into the thermal bath to wash it off, which was also off-putting, as I was then basically sitting in dirty water for the next 20 minutes. The bath water was also only lukewarm and the tubs felt slimy on the bottom. The water was also smelled very strongly of sulfur, which is to be expected given the area & water sourced from the hot springs, however it was so strong that it was burning my lungs if I inhaled too deeply. It was unpleasant. Once the mask had been washed off there was also no follow up skin care - I was dying for moisturizer or something! The massage was also disappointing as it ended up being only a back massage, and a very light one at that. At the end of all this, we found that their credit card machine only accepts cards from the Portugese bank Multibanco, therefore our credit cards wouldn't work. We ended up having to be escorted to a nearby gas station to withdraw cash in order to pay. We never received a receipt. It seemed extremely unprofessional. We cannot recommend this "spa" to other tourists as it was overall very disappointing and dirty.

The thermal pools on Sao Miguel can be a bit crowded in season. These small pools do not draw crowds. It is worthwhile to pay a few Euros and go to the private small pool through a small building that has a dressing room and some privacy. Some days you might be the only ones in the pool there. The manager is very friendly and helpful. There is a restaurant across the street that had a lot of customers (we didn't eat there), so might be good.

We went to the spot for walking track that is starting and ending near spa building. It wrote on the building that it was built in 1811! The spa has a poll with running spring hot water. The pool is not big but we were only 2 couples in it. There are also private rooms for mud wrapping and massages. We really enjoyed the peaceful vibe of the place, the Mountain View and flowers around. The entrance fee is only 3 Euro and opposite the nice restaurant is situated.the staff is very friendly and the changing rooms are clean and nice.

Fantastic experience - the thermal pool is sourced from the natural volcanic water & it is lovely to sit outside in the pool - very peaceful & incredibly relaxing. Changing rooms & toilets available too. Family friendly - there were young children & babies in the pool when we were there.
We had a couples massage which was lovely - full body massage followed by private thermal pool afterwards.
Staff really kind, welcoming & helpful.
Thanks!

Because the road to Ferraria was closed due to a landslide, my tour guide recommended this rustic spa in an off the beaten path location. The drive to Caldeiras was lovely and the cobblestone road was lined by the unusual plane trees with their camouflage bark and angular branches. At the end of the road is a very small village which apparently, at one time, was a get away destination for the wealthy citizens of Sao Miguel. Sadly, the remnants of these beautiful homes are dilapidated but still face the town. One new restaurant exists and is surrounded by these crumbling homes. Multiple trailheads can be found beginning here. The small spa is simple, rustic and cozy. The menu options are limited. I opted for a relaxing massage with a local pineapple mask. The rooms are small and lined with wood panels. The massage table was simple and firm. In the room was a deep concrete tub filled with the local warm spring water. The room was dark and lit with candles and overhead music was piped into the room. The therapist performed a basic Swedish type massage which was followed by the face mask. Afterwards, I soaked in the private tub. I had the option of going into the hotter public pool behind the building but the thought of trying to put on my one piece bathing suit while wet was not appealing. I could also hear people in the pool and I preferred a solitary experience. The bathrooms are nice but I did not see a shower. This is not the spa at the Mandarin Oriental so if you are looking for an upscale experience, this is not the place for you. Otherwise, I would recommend this spa since it is not crowded, charming in its rustic-ness and an ethereal beauty to the crumbling facade of the houses in this out of the way village.

We came in after a hike and luckily no other persons were around. The one and only pool had 38.5C which is quite hot on a sunny day. Price is 3€|person which is ok for the pool and service.

Would highly recommend for people looking for unique experience rather than luxurious spa. Place is really old but authentic and full body massage was really good! (Thanks to male massagist). You can also enjoy the bath and a cup of tea after. Reasonable prices

Amazing place for relaxing... unique thermal in São Miguel, Argila´s thermal water... few people there, open from 10 to 23h... for me, as fan of thermals, other golden reality in Azores, once again!!

Massage and other treatments form body and mind avaliable. Also suggest a meal in the restaurant in front of the SPA.

Enjoy

we went as a couple for the opening of this spa, the massage girl was really nice and quiet professionnal, whereas the young lady running the place was definitely far more interested by the money we could get out of our wallet than our well-being ; which is a shame for a SPA that aims itself to be rather a good one in european ranking if we consider the prices quiet high but the services are really low : 80 euros for a bath and a massage but no towels, no bathrooms, no cold water when you try desperately to cool yourself in the very very warm bath ... i even did not feel well at some point and we had to take the water from the young lady massaging us ... there is no information about the prices and the services, no bill, no trace whatsoever of money, no credit card of course and the young commercial running it is far from being nice, you definitely have the feeling that your ARE a tourist and somehow you will be screwed ... bad vibes there are places far more beautiful to get a SPA go to Furnas that's magic !! and cheaper !
