Stunning Monument
Oct 2019
Even for those who are atheists, it is a well worth climbing monument. The symmetry of the stairs are incredible. Ans the traveler is pleased when he meets the above gardens.

Impressive
Aug 2019 • Family
Impressive sanctuary mainly for its remote and dramatic location, but also for its 14 chapels, in a similar but smaller scale than the one in brava.

Beautiful area with an interesting drive from Arcos de Valdevez to get there
Jun 2019 • Couples
The church is high up in the mountains. To get there from the east you have to take a road that runs alongside the mountain at times. You overlook the valleys and small towns on the way up, a beautiful sight. My wife gets nervous as there are no guardrails and you pass the occasional cow or goat walking along the highway. If you like older churches with Gothic/neoclassic architecture then you will love this church. The two major complaints I had when visiting was that the men’s room smelled at the time of our visit and the grounds were not maintained with weeds growing and some litter on the grounds. Visiting during a slow time of the year and below normal temperatures could explain this. The doors to the interior of the church were locked during our visit. I noted that they have a small elevator on the side of the church. When in use this would be excellent for people that have problems climbing stairs. It was not in use when we visited. Overall a very pleasant ride and visit. Considering the ride, visiting the church and surrounding grounds, stopping for lunch, I would consider this a half day event. There is a little café around the corner of the church that we stopped at for lunch and the food was excellent.

The hike in the Sanctuary is beautiful
Oct 2018 • Couples
We came to hike the Our Lady of Peneda trail. We did not have a chance to see the inside of the church but the outside was beautiful. There is a small cafe there if you'd like a coffee or a sandwich. We parked our car and hiked the circuit in about four hours. The scenery was varied between granite, trees, lots of small springs, with different ecosystems. There are also some historic spots to visit along the way. It was a very beautiful spot and a nice afternoon hike. There are some elevation changes on the trail and I recommend having sturdy shoes. The trails are well marked. We had our own guide but you could easily do it on you own if you ask a few questions at the beginning. So glad that we were able to visit the sanctuary.

Remote and beautiful place
Jun 2018 • Solo
This remote spot justly deserves a visit if you are exploring the area. Once you leave the small village Lamas de Mouro, drive along a couple of kilometres or so until you find a crossroad. Then take the picturesque local road that will lead you to the sancturary along a beautiful valley. The sanctuary itself will remind you of the famous Bom Jesús in Braga, but in a more modest version, although the building is also monumental. The church has a neoclassical design with the usual combination of granite stones and white walls. The cool and quiet temple is preceded by a monumental access and the usual geminated stairs so frequent in Portugal. Despite being in a such remote and rural location, there is some infrastructures around the sanctuary: besides a small village around it, there are some shops, an inviting restaurant run by a very nice lady and even a hotel. One of the strong points of the place is the natural environment, there are amazing views of the green mountains from the temple. They surely chose this place as the temple location by that. Once you´ve seen the place, cross the tiny bridge and drive along the local road -there weren´t any road signs as far as I remember- that leads to Adrão and Soajo. That´s a very nice and relaxed drive along a deserted road through a beautiful rural area, almost like on the TV advertisements.

If you have a car this is a must
Jun 2018 • Couples
North Portugal guide book gave a tour of the National Park and this was a highlight. Baking hot day at 34c. Isolated away from the mass tourism, but what a joy to walk the steps and visit the cool interior of the Church. Make sure you stock up with pottery at the local shops. Recommend driving round to the top entrance into the village unless you want to walk all the steps. Enjoy the setting and a cool drink in the a/c cafe.

It is as most know a national monument and a must visit. Along with the stairs there is a “holy pathway” really worth the sight

Lovely place to visit
May 2018 • Couples
Beautiful Church and the steps set it off very well. When you walk up and down the steps it's worth pausing to look into each of the small chapels.
