- Judith PWimborne Minster, United Kingdom16 contributionsI'm going again, as soon as they have another open day!Absolutely loved it! Went early, left late. I'm a history buff, and the details of the buildings, plus the in depth knowledge of the re-enactors kept me occupied all day, in spite of it being a relatively small site. When the occupants cook their own lunch in the bread oven in the cottage and eat it off a wooden plate, while wearing authentic period costume, you really get a sense of 1642. But if you ask, you can learn all about the different construction techniques used to make the buildings, watch the blacksmith working at his forge, etc.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 August 2024
- bj13johnsonPortsmouth, United Kingdom31 contributionsA fascinating placeAn absolutely fascinating place to visit. It really feels like you have stepped back in time. The volunteers are amazing, all in character, knowledgeable, interesting and clearly skilled at their ‘jobs’. I was there more than 2 hours, lost in time and woodsmoke! The entry fee is a bargain (£5 for oldies) and the little shop has snacks and drinks. I really recommend a visit.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 August 2024
- Seren BBournemouth, United Kingdom58 contributionsFantastic afternoonWhat an absolute treat .. we were taken here by a local friend and it was fabulous. The volunteers are in character and are super passionate about their lives in the village, even the children were dressed and spoke in 17c English etc. It was a fascinating day, I loved my chat with the medicine man and my partner loved chatting with the blacksmith. Will definitely go back.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 August 2024

Bought the blacksmith experience day for my husband. What a fantastic day in a beautiful setting! The blacksmith was so kind, knowledgeable and patient. Loads of skills and history facts learnt. A full day of fire, sparks and hammering! Great value and all the proceeds go to the charity as blacksmith volunteers his time. Thank you. A day to cherish and remember forever.

We visited Little Woodham as a friend in foreign climes asked us to take photos for him. It is amazing how someone outside the UK can point us to one of the country’s hidden gems.
Just outside Gosport, close to royal Navy buildings and housing estates, is a charity dedicated to recreating 1642, the year the English civil war broke out (Not the Roses, wrong place) in a small village environment. There are recreations of the houses, and workings and the volunteers remain in character for the period. I found my conversation with the “scribe” illuminating, educational and embarrassing as I need a spell checker for my typing. It was a warm, well done and heartfelt feel for the period and everyone involved should get credit for it.
We regularly get visitors from outside the UK, this has become a place we will take them to.

Of more interest to the historically interested adults in our family, as opposed to the children (ages ranged from 7-14 years). The adults took in everything, from the building construction, village layout, items made etc. the children no so, unfortunately they quickly moved around the site, looking within the houses for things to do and touch, before playing in the woods! Don't think the site will have had any impact on their memories of summer activities, but the adults enjoyed seeing the way we used to live, and looking through the wood to the contrast in modern housing that we now occupy! The site being very near to a modern housing estate.
I think some sort of treasure hunt around the site for the children would have been a great idea, and a who do you think lived in a house like this scenario, would have held their interest more.
We won't visit again, but that's not to say we didn't think this to be a fab little place to visit at least the once. We spent 1 hour at the site.

Today was the best day I've spent in a while. Everyone involved there was polite, knowledgeable, but more importantly, they were fun to talk to. They really knew what they were talking about and seemed to enjoy their particular subject. It was fun and educational at once. I'd recommend this to anyone visiting the area. But a warning, we arrived there half hour after opening time and we were still chatting away to people at closing time!!

What an amazing find. Set in the middle of a housing estate, surrounded by woodland you step back in time to the 17th century. Manned by very knowledgeable volunteers you get a glimpse of history as it truly was. Cannot recommend this enough.

The May Day celebrations were amazing, so much to see and do. Interactive May pole dancing! Story telling, Morris dancers and much much more. Truly felt like stepping back in time and so relaxing being in the woodland atmosphere.

We did a forge day and spent the whole day with Dave, the Blacksmith.
We had the most amazing time and I can only highly recommend the experience.
Dave is very knowledgeable, skilled and patient with us newbys!
We made some nails, hooks and a choice of what we wanted to make. (I chose a wine holder for when we camp and my husband chose a fire poker) we will never underestimate the effort in such simple things again!

Considerably smaller than I expected but perfectly well formed! You won’t “stumble” across this place by accident that’s for sure. Difficult to find even with a sat nav. Run by enthusiastic volunteers and hidden away in a lovely wooded spot squashed between a housing estate and a garden centre. An hour on site is probably all you need.

Is this wheelchair friendly?
Written 5 February 2019
The village is in a wooded area with uneven surfaces, but if you have a willing assistant you should be all right! We do have visitors who use a wheelchair to get around and they seem to have managed previously. All doors to the houses are wide enough to allow access. I hope that helps.
We're next open at Easter so check opening dates on the website before you travel.
